hi, i recently bought a pair if ER4p, and am having trouble fitting them properly in my ears. The thing is, i dont know if i am doing it correctly, i followed the instructions that were given with the earphones, but i do a a slight pain when they are inserted, but it receeds, i do get a good seal on them, is the pain due to the fact that i have inserted them in too far or what. At times i do feel a sharp like needle pain when i insert the ER4p's in my ears is this normal?

any help would gladly be appreciated.

thanks

Ouch, I know what you are talking about!

If I get you right, the pain you feel might be a result of you inserting the Ety too deep at a bad angle. The edge of one of the tip's rings "bites" your ear...
Give your plugs a good lick (or however you prefer to moisten them), reach ober your head, pull your ear up & backwards by the helix and twist the Ety into the canal, then release the ear. Try not to insert them too deeply and try what final position is comfortable. You know the perfect position because the seal is good & you hardly feel that the Etys are in your ears. I prefer the Etys stem to point diagonally downwards, above the lobe.
A good seal is reached by the combination of moisture & position, there is no need to insert the Etys too deeply, you might even loose some soundstage when they are in too deep.

It takes a while to find the fit you like. At least it did for me. I opted for the foam tips verses the white plastic plugs. I find they are easier for me and more comfortable. Plus, they don't discolor

They sound great though, don't they!

A search and some reading will reveal more than you ever wanted to know about people sticking things in their ears...

But to summarize what others have said here a million times or so:

You don't want them in too far. You don't want them out too far. You don't want them too wet. You don't want them too dry. You don't want them to hurt. You don't want them to sound muffled...and so on.

Oliver's recommendations are solid. Try those. I will add a couple of things myself:

I suggest that you wet them only slightly.

I would also pay attention to feeling pressure in your ear. You should not insert them so far that you feel like you are underwater or changing altitude in a plane.

After you have inserted them, many people find that pulling back on the top of the ear briefly helps seat them.

I would suggest trying out the foamies with them for a day or two. This might give you a better sense of how far they should be inserted. When you get a good seal and a good sound, be sure to note how the foamies look when you remove them. They will have altered shape to match your ear canal, and you can get some idea of what you are shooting for in both depth and direction.

Good luck. It's worth the hassle...
