I have had several cheap pairs of headphones, and i want to move up, as whatever i have last a few months, then the bass starts to destrot like mad. Its all just click click. These headphones will need to be easily powered, as they will be matched with a portable CD player. I mainly listen to metal, so good bass response and something that can present guitars well would be good. As well, they need to have good transient respone, as i will also use them for late night practice sessions on my guitar amp. They should also be quite sturdy, and be able too handle the being thrown into a backpack. Comfort is not that big a concern, i will most likely be listening for no more than 2 hours at a time. But most importantly is the need to not destort. I usually listen at around 8-10 on my portable CD player, and use the built in bass boost. Cost is also important, im only a student, so i don't have tonnes of money to go spend. Please recommend the cheapest headphones that would suit what i need them to do.

Lowe,

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about the wallet!!

As to headphones, there are many in the somewhat cheap price range that will sound good: Grado SR-40 or 60, Sony V6, Koss Porta Pro, KS35, and so on.

Can you narrow down your budget a little?? Maybe say under $100, under $150, etc?? That might make things a little easier to recommend to you.

im in canada, so probally a $80-100 american budget. I have read the reviews of the V6 on audioreview, and they seem pretty good. Will they crap out like the current sonys i have now? (MDR V150) I had that annoying click of the drivers bottoming out when listening loud. I would pay more if i had just to make sure that the click won't be there, or it won't develop.

Lowe,

Never heard of anyone here complaining about their V6's having problems like that!! I own a pair and like them. My dad owned a pair for years and never had a problem. But keep in mind, they are discontinued, so if you find one any time soon, you might consider snatching it up quickly before everyone sells out and you miss the boat!! These cans are pretty efficient, so tons of power is not needed to make them go quite loud!!

Lowe,

If they're new, that's a pretty good price!! I paid something like $80 for mine just a month ago from a DJ supply place in CA. If new, I would go for it myself as they are pretty decent cans!!

Sounds like a good deal, as long as they're from a reputable dealer who's not selling a pair of used cans as new.

But, so far no one has posted that their JVC cans were not in some way either rusted or deteriorated badly!! We'll have to see what JVC does in respsonse to the complaints, so hopefully they start sending out replacement pads for those who got bad ones!

Are you sure that unpleasant sound you experienced isnt due to clipping? I don't know of any portable cd player that doesn't with max bass settings at 8-10 volume level no matter which headphone. If i'm wrong tell me the model so I can buy one.

JVC simply blew me off. They sent me a condescending email. I tried to take it further and they wont respond. ANYONE I can talk to has no authority to make a decision, and refers me to someone who doesnt/wont call back. Out of 10 headphones I salvaged three. Mine werent in that bad of shape but I DID HAVE TWO WITH A DEAD DRIVER. ALL OF THEM HAD DETERIORATED EARPADS. It would be risky to get a pair but its only $17.
I am angry people were sold merchandise in poor to very poor condition but I dont know exactly how to respond. Mine were going to be mostly Christmas presents so I am sending most back. I tried to mod the earpad but I couldnt get them to sound right, so I ordered some at my own expense. The pads cost $26.50 so the cost ends up being about $45 for each headphone. As well as I like the jvcs its still a good deal for me. However, for the rest of you I WOULD PASS.

i use a old philips portable CD player, its not clipping, cause i get the same thing with my reciever (old pioneer sx 737) and its not the entire specturm, just bass lines and kick drums, and clipping effects the entire audio spectrum, not just the bass notes.
