Good morning Head-fiers,

Next month, I'm going to NY and I'll buy my first hi-fi cups, but I'm having trouble choosing the best pair for my taste.

One of the main reasons is that I don't have the headphones on hand to test, so I will have to base on some feedback from you head-fiers =P. The other reason is the taste for different styles of music, in order of most to least heard: Rock, Metal, Trance, Jazz, Hip Hop, Progressive and Classic.
As for DAC/AMP, I'm getting Schiit Modi+Magni.

The headphones I have in mind are:

From research/graphs the X1 would be first recommendation followed by DT880 for your music style. The X1 is also recommended by Tyll's Wall of Fame for open headphones. Haven't heard those headphones though.

If you're going to be in New York CIty you should just demo a bunch of headphones at JR (www.jr.com for more information).  I have read that they have a large selection of headphone to demo.  At least that's what I would do.

Ow thanks for that tip, I was really afraid i would find any store to tryout the headphone. I will send a email asking for the availability =)

B&H photo might have a headphone demo site in their store too.  They're also in New York City. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

B&H has a pretty big demo section, but it's noisy so it's hard to try open models. Of the ones on your list, I remember their having DT990, Momentum, K701, and maybe M100. Remember to bring your own music.

Of the phones you listed my favorites are the Fidelio X1, and they should suit your musical taste perfectly too. However one thing that is missing from what you are looking for is where are you going to use them? You have listed a mix of open closed and portables.... The X1 will not do well at all as a portable, but it is a great at home can. V Moda M100 will probably be more suitable as a closed back portable. (full disclosure: I have not heard them yet).

PS - that list is terrific BTW. Can't really go very wrong with any of the models listed.

From what I've read, DT880 Pro's have a stronger force clamp than the DT880s premiums.  The premiums supposedly sound a tad better.  Again this is what I've read as I haven't done a comparison myself.
