Lately I've been thinking as most headfiers do so often, of upgrading in my system ampwise. I started this hobby with **** phones so I upgraded those first - hd590 run out of the headphone jack of my receiver. Then headfi came along and I bought my first amp - headroom little, which I am still to this day quite happy with. Then came the hd600 and I got swept up in the tube frenzy, enter the mg head, which I have never been completely happy with, mostly I believe because I have still never found the right 5751 to smooth out the highs. However I am getting tired of spending so much time searching and bidding and losing auctions on ebay, I would rather spend more time listening less time tweaking. So here in lies the qaundry, do I : upgrade the little, sell the little, sell the mg head, go for one of the higher end solid state amps or one of the higher end tube amps, say my budget is 500 - 700 usd. Or should I just forget it at that price range altogether????? Cmon guys talk me into or out of something here!!!!

Buy a Raytheon before you sell the MG Head. It shouldn't be THAT expensive to try it and that'll keep you out of the revolving door of MG Head ownership that other people seem to go through.

It's probably easier to sell the Little than upgrade it given your knowledge of things. Check the prices out for yourself and decide but my guess is that if you could find a buyer, it'd be cheaper to sell and buy new even if your next amp is from HeadRoom.

Another thread exists called "Best Bang For the Buck..." that lists my favorites for the HD600 in each price range and why. For you, you might be better off trying to figure out exactly what it is you don't like about your Little and MG Head before spending more money. And I know this is rhetorical but: source matters.

thanks kelly, where can I find this elusive raytheon you speak of?

supposedly the sony ns500v is a fairly good cdp, at least it's gotten good reviews around here, anyway thats my source, I have been pondering a rega planet for awhile now but just can't justify the hefty price tag at this point.

As for the rest of you thanks for nothin!!!

Usually its easy to get people to help you spend money around here.....

I noticed in your profile that you like rock........have you considered a different brand of headphone? Grados or Beyers, possibly?
I think that having different headphones provides one with greater choice.......and isn't life all about choices? Just a thought.

hey joe, I've been thinking about the grado 225's for my next headphone since reading that headroom labels them as the best headphones for rock.

And as far as spending my money, you're just buttering me up for the cd I'm getting you for the cd exchange aren't ya???

Sorry I can't help you, but I have a question for you. How do you like the 590s? I thought they were pretty good, and well suited for me, but I haven't tried them with an amp or even a good source, how much do they improve, and what do you listen to with them? Thanks.

darkwolf, my source is a sony ns500v, I listen to rock mostly, sigur ros, gybe, flaming lips, pink floyd, zeppelin, etc. the hd590's do well on their own but shine with an amp, it's hard to say how much they improve because it's hard to put a number on such a thing, but I would say that any high end headphone will see significant improvement with an amp, and depending on how much you are willing to spend....... well you can see where this is going.......
