Hello, I am a bit of a noob to ICE (in-canal earphones). I came across Shure earphones in a trade show and these are selling at a promotional price now. I am using an Ipod touch and would want a nice pair of earphones to replace the supplied one. I listen to a wild variety of genres of music, classical, rock, jazz and speech (podcasts) too. I am zooming in to either the SE420 or SE530. How much difference btw these two? If anyone who has listened to both of this ICE could advise me on each one is more worthwhile. BTW, the price difference between these 2 earphone is US$90.00. I am leaning toward the 420 but wouldn't mind the $90 if 530 could deliver significantly better sound. Thanks in advance.

For the $90 extra I would take the SE530. The naturalness of these is astounding. I own the Shure E5C which is the same as the 530. Especially percussion is very life like.

dont listen to this guy, the e5c are totally different earphones to the se530, the se530 are triple driver earphones the se420 are dual driver, and so are the e5c.

i prefer the bass an mids on the se530 but the se430 are certainly flatter and more neutral sounding. the se530 do sound natural, but not quite neutral, dont confuse the two.

I like the mid bass on the 530s. I find it very natural and certainly a deeper extention than the 420. I can't say I disagree about the hiss.

I think most will recommend the 530s, but judging by the posts so far... I'm still not sure if thread is going clear too much up for you.

Either way, you will get a big improvement with either choice. I do know that the 530s would be easier to sell/trade should you decide they aren't for you.

I was really considering purchasing the E530 but I've been getting kind of fed up with the shure sound signature. To my ears they sound very artificial and lifeless, well at least my E4's did anyway. Can any body please tell me if the E530 sound similar? my Future Sonics have a very natural bass, instrument and vocal presentation and I don't really want to give that up, especially If I'm going to be paying up to 3 times as much.

I have a pair of se530s and an iaudio 7 playing flac. Yes, there is a hiss with this combo....had the iaudio x5 with no hiss(and a bit better sound). My problem is that I'm on my second pair of se530s and I have to call shure again because of the wires cracking....AGAIN. I love the sound of them but....sending them in every 6 months is a real pain in the ass.

My buddy has a pair of 210 or 310...can't remember, and they just started stiffening up just 3 months after he bought them. My old Ec3 I sold to a guy at my work, are still perfect.

I have to say though....shure customer service is GREAT!!

Definitely I am not glad to read this... How much audible the hiss is (with iAudio7) ? Is it more annoying then just some barely audible ambient noise ? E.g. audible only during really quiet passages of music and you have to focus to hear it ? Or is it immensely intense e.g.: like taking over even during musical peaks ? Or somewhere between ?

I have Se530's and an iPod touch...unamped there is hiss if there is no other noise or very quiet noise. Most of the time it goes unnoticed. If you can afford the SE530s get the SE530s. The bass is tighter and more controlled than on the 420. Also I feel like the extension in both directions is better, and more accurate.
