I know this is asked a lot, but I'm getting desperate.

I'm listening to Gary Jules' version of "Mad World" the piano is haunting, the strings in the background are chilling. I love this song. I want to hear more like it. Similar music is made by gary jules on his main albums, but I want to find more music that relies on the piano to give a haunting feeling to it. any help would be appreciated.

Just to clarify, when you say "haunting" do you mean frightening or do you mean "deeply emotional/emotion inducing"?
If the latter, then buy Ludovico Einaudi's "Divenire" NOW.
If the former, try Michael Nyman's OST for "The Piano".

to be more specific, when I say haunting, its like a combination of eeriness and a deep emotional feeling. Its, like, sad, but in a way that's good. if that makes any sense at all...

Go with Ludovico Einaudi.
Also, Peter Gabriels "The Last Temptation of Christ" soundtrack-its phenomenal.

Don't know if you already knew this but Mad World is from the soundtrack from Donnie Darko. Check out the entire album. This one has got some absolute great music. A little "haunting" feeling is what you get from almost all the music on there. The rest of the piano songs are composed by Michael Andrews. Absolute awesome!
And if you like it you might also like Max Richter with the albums "Memoryhouse" and "Blue Notebooks". A lot of pianoworks on there as well. Little different but also gives you a strange feeling when listening to it.

I would describe the following as haunting:

Emily Haines - Knives don't have you back [album]
Matthew Good - In a Coma [Bonus Disc]
Nine Inch Nails - Still [Halo_17 v2]

Although to be honest, I don't think you'll ever find a song that compares to mad world.

thanks for all the responses everyone! I'm finding some pretty good music here. and Kyle, you're right, mad world is extremely hard to compete with.

Off the top of my head....

Amber Asylum -- "Songs of Sex and Death" - This was once one of my favourite late night albums years ago, the first few tracks have quite an eerie quality to them, i suppose this fits into the Gothic / Neo-Classical side of things.

Low -- "Long Division" - Very stripped down and minimal, "the sound of oblivion" as i think someone described them is a pretty close.

Set Fire to Flames -- "Telegraphs in Negative / Mouths Trapped in Static" - This album wasn't received by the critics terribly well, but i much prefer it to the first one, especially the first disc. Lots of lovely despondent music on this.

Also maybe William Basinski's "Garden of Brokenness"& "Melancholia" as well as Rachel's "Systems / Layers" may fit the bill.

Just want to say thanks to all in the thread as I have found some great music in this thread. The song Mad World is played at the end of a few episodes of the show without a trace and I never really heard enough of it to know what it was so a very big thank you to the original poster.
