Ok, here's the deal: I want to consolidate and perhaps upgrade my phones. So here's my plan: my UE-10s will be coming soon, which makes the E4 expendable (I'll keep the sf5p for the plane). Also, I'm not in love with my HD 595, so I'm ready to make a change there. Finally, I'm also not married to my DT770.

So that means the following are on the chopping block: E4, DT 770, HD 595.

Right now, I am leaning toward either the HD 650, K701, or sending the DT 770 to Larry. But I'm open to all suggestions. I guess I'm looking for a "next step" kind of full-sized can.

And I'm not in the market for the E500 (well, not yet

) due to the sonic bliss I expect from the UE-10.

Heh, I'll buy your HD595.

I'm not sure why you'd keep the sf5p if you have the UE-10pros. If you weren't crazy about the HD595 I wouldn't necissarily recommend the 650s. You could probably make about 500$ (without selling the sf5p), enough for a 701 (and amp) or an RS-1.

I'm keeping the sf5p because they have a very different sound signature from the UE10. Plus I want something less precious for plane travel, and for me the sf5p does better on the plane than the E4. And I actually feel like the 650 could be good. I loved them at the meet (albeit out of some rigs that are far superior to mine). I feel like the 595 is just trying to be something it's not.

The 701 is tempting. I'm set for Grados for now with the HF-1.

If you've got the UE10 (and SF5P's for bangers), what's the point of having any other 'phone? I should hope that the UE10's would render any other headphone useless. Unless you need to hear things around you?

I'll eat the headphone you don't want for you if you like...

Whether you want a 650 depends on what you don't like about your 595's.

I agree that the UE10 is probably going to be more accurate than any other headphone, but you won't get the spatial sense that you will with a full size open headphone.

Ah, I forgot about that. In that case I'd say why not step up to a pair of HD-650's?

It's a good suggestion, but despite what many say the 595 is not THAT different from the 650, so it really depends what he doesn't like about the Senn he knows so he can decide about the Senn he doesn't.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Either the 650s or the K701.

But I'm also really tempted by the AT Woodies...

Sloth, I think it might be that the forward (for Senn) presentation sounds a bit forced on the 595, like it's not something it really wants to do. I also found the soundstage a bit "blobby."

Ah, so if you want to stay near the 595, go for the 650; if you want something new, go k701 or if you really want the opposite of an IEM, maybe a k501?

Well, FWIW, I listen to classical music and have owned the 595, 701 and 650. I have actually bought and sold the 701 twice now. The first time it had just come out, and I eventually decided it wasn't for me. The second time, I had forgotten what I thought the first time so I went back and did the same thing all over again. I now only own the 650. It's not perfect, but for what I listen to it's the lesser of all the evils. YMMV. The K701 is a little bit less blobby soundstage wise, but I use crossfeed most of the time anyway and that really makes the 650 shine in my setup. I found the 595 a tad sharp, but I also had the same issue with the upper mids of the 701 (not surprisingly if you look at the graph). Problem is, the 650 is not quite sharp enough in that area, but to my overworked ears (they get pounded by a steinway D in a small room all day every day) that is a blessing.
