Im looking to get some new cans, and wanted to get some feedback from people. they would be for all kinds of music, and driven both by a home reciever and a portable mp3 (however i do plan on building a portable amp so this isnt as much of an issue)

price range would be loosely centered arround $100.

heres what ive come up with so far:
etymonic ER 6 (small and light and isolatey for traveling)
senn HD 555
senn HD 580
Grado SR 60 (ive heard good things)
AKG 501
JVC Marshmallows (cheap)
Shure E3c

so, thoughts?

Another good one to consider for all kinds of music would be the Alessandro MS-1.

They sound great out of an unamped source but even better through a reasonably good receiver.

They sell for $99 and can be bought with either a 1/4 or 1/8" plug.

i have experience only with the hd555's on your list, but they are awesome for home use.

but, with $100, be patient and get some Koss KSC75's first... then compare them (from your own ears) to the comments made around here... that way you will know if laid back sound (sennheiser) or more upfront (grado) is your best choice. also note bass, mids, highs, treble, etc... it will save you money in the long run

dont wanna spend all that unneccesary $ testing too many 'phones... some may even say amped ksc75s are better than any sub $100 'phones.

my $0.02

but if I were to make a decision solely on 1 pair of 'phones for all those purposes, I'd say AKG k81DJ's, closed for transport, decent for home use
