Obsessor that I am, I had better get this decision over with so I can get on with my life.

ok, money is a bit of a factor. These are mostly for my computer, but I want the best sound possible. I do have a little cmoy amp.

hd580 - $150
hd590 (reconditioned) $120
hd595 - $180 (?)
BeyerDT880's - $230
reconditioned HD600's - $220

I just got Grado SR60's yesterday, and while I like the sound, I can imagine that it could be better. More importantly, they definitely give me a headache. I tried turning them down, but still get a headache after a couple of hours. At first they squished my ears so I thought it was physical, but then I adjusted that and they still hurt. My working headphones are at present little futuresonics em3's which I love.

Thanks!

If the Grado's are too sharp sounding, you might want to tone down by going to 580's and 595's. They are both great bang for the buck and noticeably less bright esp the 580's. The 580's sound bassier, thicker, and the 595's are a bit more linear in the bass but with a very slight brightness. If you thick you like an airy/more forward sounding sound, go for the 595's

I like my HD590's, and if you search this forum, I am not alone.

They are probably the most comfortable of the lot, the cheapest, and despite the knocking, have a good sound.

Those are all pretty good choices -- the best for you will be a matter of preference. My personal favorite out of those is the Beyer. It's also kind of in the middle of the Grado-Sennheiser spectrum. It's not as laid back as the Senns and not as up front as the Grados. Plus, it's really comfortable (all of the headphones you've selected are pretty comfortable, the most comfortable are the 590/595/880 -- in my opinion).

I owned a pair of 580s and even with a Rega Ear amp the bass was very thin. IMHO I don't think that with a Cmoy the results can be much better. I bought the 580s and the Rega for computer use only, but after I got a pair of Alessandro MS-1s I sold them. IMO the MS-1s sounded better even straight out of the soundcard than the amped 580s. But maybe that's because I like that "in you face"-sound better.

Since you liked the Grado sound why not try a pair of Alessandros. They're supposed to be less brighter than the Grados. You can get a good deal on a pair of used MS-2s in here.

I haven't tried Grados so I don't know how uncomfortable they are but I don't have any issues with the MS-1s.

Good luck!

My only worry with the Beyer is that I heard they require a lot of power which I will not have. BUT they look delicious! I just read a nice long thread about why people like the 590's and I think I may be leaning that way...? require less power, less laid back then other senn's and can upgrade/replace the cable easily (good for me!). Anyway, still deciding....Keep comments coming! Now I will go read about the Alessandros (but this is my last day of obsessing! I swear!)

I don't mean to thread hi-jack, but I seem to be in pretty much the same conundrum. With all the aforementioned headphones on my list. I have a PA2V2 amp, so would this be capable of properly driving the DT880's? I do plan on upgrading to a Gilmore Lite down the road, but how long that road is, has yet to be determined. The 880's are what I'm leaning heavily toward and I didn't know if my amp would suffice til I upgrade? Comments??
