Well I have brought it down to these 3. I'm making just a general headphone purchase now, and I might be adding a creek OHB-11 amp a little later on, but for now these will be straight out of my Denon 1803's headphone jack.

Remember these are STRICTLY game and movie phones, music performance means little to me.

I have narrowed down the search to 3 phones.

The Beyer DT770 Pro, basefull and comfortable these phones sound like they would make nice HT phones, but the thing I am worried most about is getting far to much base from them. Now i love a good sub as much as most people (I am a general HT freak before a headphone freak) but I don't know if I would want excessive quanitites of bass being pumped directly into my ears for a long time.

The Sony V6, is something I just recently started considering, they require no amplification (which is nice) and deliver suprising preformance for around 50$ less then the other 2 sets of cans I am considering. I have heard nothing but good things about the V6's but I am more worried about short coord length here. Since this is a Home Theater setup I'm sitting about 8 feet from the TV and around 10 feet from my audio components, so coord length definetally becomes a factor.

The Senn HD590, Slightly brighter and more up front then it's more popular cousins (the 600 and 580) I thought these would be a good match for me. I liked the 580's the soundstage just seemed slightly to wide and the overall sound a little to subdued for me. So I figured that the HD590 would be a good fit for me, since they are more up front. The Replaceable coord on the sens is also a BIG plus allowing me to add distance (I'm thinking of something like 12 feet) while upgrading the sound quality

Remember these are ONLY for gaming and home theater, so choose accordingly please.

Another thing, anyone suggesting Grado cans are right out, their sound is great, but they are the most uncomfortable phones I have ever put on, leaving me with a horrid headache after about 20mins of use. So please don't recommend Grado's

Re the V6... when the cord is at full stretch, it runs to about 10ft I believe...

Or, with them being so much cheaper than the other two pairs... if you were to go the way of the V6, you could get yourself a half decent extension cable, and still have money in your pocket...

Just my $0.02

If you can stretch to an Audio-Technica ATH-A900, I'd highly recommend it... Quite apart from the sound (which is probably right up your street) it's one of the few headphones which I've found when you hold it, really gives you a sense of headphoniness (Like: "Now THESE are headphones!")

But if not, Duncan's method seems very sane. Have you tried the Sennheiser HD497 or the Beyer DT231? Either looks as potentially (un)comfortable as the V6 to me. (brackets inserted because I don't think the V6's are bad but they are definitely not the last word in long-term comfort)I don't know much about either but the DT231 has won numerous awards. Or the HD280?

how is the AT unamped?

A little thin sounding, but no moreso than Sennheisers...

They sound good enough to listen to until you can get an amp... lets put it that way

I chose the senns so that the tally would be 3:3:3

But seriously, with the v6, you could buy 2 pairs and a headphone jack splitter and then you and a friend could both watch with headphones, and compared to the 770's, you'll have a bit change left over even with the purchase of 2 pairs, and with the 590's well...

Otherwise, the 770's seem like a really fun pair of phones, great for action movie explosions and such. It might ruin gunshot sound effects, though. Gunshots generally aren't very bassy, unlike their portrayal in movies, in my experience.

Given that these are for game and movie watching, the V6's get my hands down favorite vote. These are very good phones and since you don't require tremendous fidelity, I see no reason to spend a lot of money on a set of phones.

LOL
Even Money!!!

Well, it's a dead heat, I guess that was a big help...

Maybe therein lies your answer, all 3 are good cans

I broke the tie and chose the Sony V6s. I havent heard any of these phones, but I heard MacDef say he would perfer the V6's for gaming over Senn HD600s w/ a HR Max!

That is endorsement if I have ever seen it!

I wouldn't worry about not having an amp for phones that 'really need an amp'. You HT amp probably uses its speaker amp to drive headphones through a resistor and with the impeder, (see link in my sig) can drive any phones there is with authority, thank you very much.

I think the 590s are vastly superior phones to the V6's, it's just for gaming and HT applications, I think it's overkill. Why spend 3 times as much money when you don't have to?

1.) Open design - Better soundstage, better sound, works well with a Sennheiser DSP unit for HT apps.

2.) Better sound - Oh, I already mentioned that.

3.) Can be used for Hi-Fi applications when desired (eventually) - preservation of investment, only need one can, upgradable with an Equinox cable.

4.) Coiled cord on V6 is not practical for the distance over a living room for HT, need extension cable.
