I'll be getting a Sony D-CS901 mp3 cd player soon...and I'll want to have a great headphone to go with it right away

According to what I've read on this site/forum, it seems my best choices for more or less around $100 are:

1. Grado SR-60
2. Sony V-6
3. Sony D66 Eggo

hmmmm, I'm thinking the Grado has the best sound but would be annoying for the public around me. I'll be using my portable around college and in my dorm, so ...I'm really leaning toward the closed Sony headphones.

Are the Eggo's really much better than the V-6 ???

Help me choose a headphone for my portable cd mp3 player. Name a model thats better than these listed if not already.

I am a newbie in headphones, but I want the very BEST choice in headphones around $100 (could be less). Thanks!

You should be able to get the Grado SR-80, at step up from the SR-60, for under $100. You can also get the Alessandro-Grado Music Series One, a headphone very similar to the SR-80 but supposedly a bit more refined, for $99 shipped.

The full model number on the V6 is Sony MDR-V6 (just so you don't get confused with similar numbers). I own both the Grado SR-80 and Sony MDR-V6 and find the SR-80 the better headphone; but, yes, there are times when a closed headphone is necessary, and the V6 is good for its price. For listening around others it's a good option.

Another good closed headphone that can be had for under $100 is the Sennheiser HD280 Pro. I haven't heard it, but some people prefer it to the V6. I haven't heard any of the Eggos, but they have a dedicated following here.

I don't know how powerful the output is on your PCDP, but in terms of drivability, from best to worst, the headphones probably rate like this: Sony Eggos > Grado SR-80/Alessandro-Grado Music Series One > Sony MDR-V6 > Sennheiser HD280 Pro. If you find that you sometimes listen at full volume that may be an issue, but otherwise probably not as any of those headphones are relatively easy to drive.

Don't sweat your decision too much -- most likely you'll be very happy with any of the headphones you mentioned or any others that are recommended here.

Thanks for your advice and other generous comments :¡^

So it seems the Sony MDR-D66sl Eggo Pro are better than the V-6?

Where can I purchase Eggo's if I chose to go with those?
I have yet to find a retailer with them in stock...

I think the D66 Eggos on an absolute scale sound better than the V6. Better balance of sound. However it's not as practical, in noisy places, where the V6 is great. I've been using the MDR-7506 (the V6 in other words) on planes recently instead of my crappy EX70's and they do a great job of blocking out noise. Both are (just about) pocketable, with a slightly bigger pocket required for the V6. In quieter places though, I'd prefer the D66.
Get both...? hehehehehehe...
