So I have this other computer to play Counter-Strike: Source on... but it never seems to work! All you Windows Geeks - I desperately need your help!

I just did a fresh install of Windows 2000 and installed all my graphics and audio drivers without any problems whatsoever. However, when I play videos (any kind - dvds, tv recordings, whatever) the color comes in with very low color, very high gama, and very high brightness. It isn't fixable at all, especially since all my color settings are at normal. Something is just plain wrong with the video. I have tried a few different video applications, divx player, windows media 10, and they all do this. I have tried different video formats - divx, mpeg, avi, wmv - same problem.

I also am now having a problem playing Counter-Strike: Source, as well (this is the main thing I want to fix, since it is the machine's only purpose). When I start the game, it tells me that it has "failed to set the video mode properly", and then re-adjusts itself a few times - it does this a total of three times before it gives up and just tells me that the game requires DirectX 7 hardware at a minimum- worst error message, EVER! I wish I could give details or a log file or something, but I can't because of the program's poor design

And yes, I do in fact have directX 9c and all the latest drivers for all my hardware. I am now lost - and I'd rather not do a complete re-install of my software. On my previous installs of Operating Systems on this computer (this was originally a linux server and audio box) all hardware worked fine.

My system specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Processor (2.0 ghz)
MSI nForce 2 motherboard
GeForce FX 5700 256mb
M-Audio Delta Audiophile 24/96
512mb DDR 3500 ram

I appreciate any advice and help! Thank you in advance!

Completely uninstall and delete all video drivers from your pc and re-install some new ones, but this time try some alternative drivers like an older model or 3rd party driver if you can find one. Make sure Windows is updated properly and you aren't running any unnecessary software in memory. Check your cable connections between video card and monitor. Sounds to me like an improperly installed driver or driver configuration. Make sure you go through all the settings for the driver software, you can control colors and stuff like that through this software and some settings might need to be adjusted.
