More info would be good.

Windows machine? When you power it on you are getting the "error loading os" message? What is the exact error message?

I would first make sure you put the cable back in correctly and completely.

its a win xp machine. The cable is definitely plugged back correctly to the hard disks becoz i can detect my 2 hard disks in the bios.

the error message:
verifying dmi pool data..................................
boot from cd : (there is no cd in my cd rom)

Error loading OS

Unplug the drive and examine the pins, make sure none are bent or mangled. You will always see the "verifying dmi pool data........" and "boot from cd:" will show up if it's in the bios boot order, those are normal. Try and boot to a dos disk and run check disk with the /f flag to repair any errors it finds.

Make sure you didn't accidently unplugged/lossen the other end of the cable where it attaches to the motherboard. Easy to do and not see it. Also does the drive spin up, do you hear the drive making noise? If you don't make sure the power plug for the hard drive is still fully connected.

Steve Gibson's SpinRite is miracle-working software if anyone ever has a hard drive that goes dead on them such as this guy. It has been known to "resurrect" hard drives that even refuse to boot such as the OP's.

Of course, you should still be backing up that data ASAP!
