Hi all,
I currently have a Meridian 200 transport and a Meridian 203 DAC. I feel the DAC (bitstream) is probably ready for a change as it's 16 years old (as is the transport).
Things have moved on since I got it. I listened via a speaker setup with pre-power amps and now want to just listen through headphones.
I have a number of options
1) Replace DAC +get a headphone amp (already have a Supermacro IV)
2) Replace both + get a headphone amp (")
3) Get a CD player/DAC which can drive headphones direct (digital preamp, etc.)
4) Other???
Is my Meridian 200 transport still up to the job, if I give it a good modern DAC, e.g. Benchmark DAC1/other?
Are the units from Wadia, etc. with digital preamp able to drive phones directly - anyone doing this - benefits/drawbacks?
BTW, I only want to listen to Redbook CD
Advice please, probably need to choose a path to take prior to selecting components, but if my Meridian 200 transport is still deemed good given a change in other components then separate headamp may be best - ready to spend, spend, spend.
