I tried to do the "Blue tack" mod for the hd-280 but when I put the headphones back together, the volume is really really quiet even with my player's volume maxed (was never like this before) and there is absolutely no bass at all!!! The cans don't shake whatsoever like they used to. All the wire connections look intact however. Any ideas?

Blue Tac will normally dampen the sound aka absorb soundwaves. It sounds like you probably used too much on the inside of the cups. Try significantly reducing the amount of Blue Tac used and keep trying till it sounds right to you.

I'm not familiar with this mod, so I may be wrong, but it sounds like you may be suppressing the movement of the speaker cone in some way. Try opening it up again and checking that there is adequate room for it to move freely.

First of all, I forgot to mention that I was using Silly Putty instead of Blue Tack. Should this make a difference? Secondly, I tried removing the Silly Putty from both cans and the cans still do not vibrate like they used to (also, the bass is still non-existant, and the sound is real quiet). But none of the wires look disconnected.....

Did I most likely break something?

i had the same problem with the k81s. i just removed some it, you dont need a lot really. silly putty should do the job almost just as well, i doubt theres going to be an astronomical difference.

Actually, the silly putty may have a significantly different effect. Silly putty was discovered when searching for a rubber substitute. Rubber is quite dense and very absorbent of sound waves. The putty might have a drastically larger effect than the blue tak would as it would seem as though the blue tak is less absorbent. Should be interesting to experiment and see if that is really the case.
I'd also worry about using silly putty over blue tak because blue tak is not too affected by warmth and will hold its shape fairly well. Silly putty on the other hand, starts to run off of whatever it is holding onto and puddle around the lowest point of gravity where it will settle. I'd almost expect that if you live in a warmer climate or use the phones for excessively long time, you could open them and see a mess of putty sitting at the bottom of the cups.

oh, you might have destroyed a driver. I did the mod on mine using blue (green, actually) tack and got no problems.
you better send them to sennheiser for warranty repair, if you still are within warranty period.
