Hey there guys,

I've been searching for a pair of portable headphones for a while. The only problem is that I have a size 8 head! I use usually one of the last settings on V6's, 555's, and about 3/4 of the way on Grado's. I was initially looking at K81DJ's, but after trying on my friend's pair they don't seem to reach my ears as well as I had hoped

I'm looking for an open pair as well as a closed pair, and listen to all kinds of music, so don't worry about that as a factor. I'll be using a 5G iPod and a MacBook Pro as my sources, with files ripped at 192kbps - 256kbps as well as a few lossless ones. I'd like to keep price at around $60 or less each pair.

I already have a pair of KSC75's, but I'm looking for something with a headband. So far I am considering the Portapro and SJ5, but have no way to tell how big the headband is.

Thanks for your help!

The Senn eH series can get pretty big, in fact I can put them on my normal sized head on the smallest setting.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Any more will be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know how well the Equation RP-15 fairs on a big melon?

I have a 7 1/2 or 7 3/4 head. I can't remember which, but big regardless. Try Sennheiser HD25-1. Bit pricey but they fit my noggin easily. Good sound and you can use them with almost any source.

Cheers

My head isn't a size 8, but I do have trouble buying caps and hats that will fit. As for open headphones, I've found that the Sennheiser PX100s sound pretty nice and are comfortable, too. Surprisingly "full" sound for a pair of portable, foldable headphones. I would guess they would just fit you .. I use them at the second- or third-from-the-last setting.

Edit: I must be slipping ... I'm a large-headed guy who has multiple sets of canal phones and IEMs. I notice you have or have had some in-ears -- why not upgrade along those lines, for comfort (and to beat the Southern California heat)? The PX100s won't heat up your ears and head much, but closed headphones, especially, would. Or do you want at least "one of everything"?

I hear ya.... Im also a size 8 mellon. Team Asian BIG-head here. Don't you hate shopping for sunglasses?

I practically wear my SR60 at the smallest setting.
My sportapro is plenty big too.
I had an MDRV6 and an HD280 and they both fit perfectly, the V6 being the better sounding of the 2 IMHO.

Well, it's not so much that I want at least "one of everything", as that I would prefer to use a set of portable cans around campus as opposed to IEM's. Haha, don't ask me why, I guess it may just be an unconscious way of justifying the purchases! Man, why do I have to have such a big head?

Does anyone have any suggestions as far as the Equation RP-15 vs the Audio Technica SJ5? I'm not sure just how long the headbands stretch compared to the K81's, but at least with the SJ5's or K81's I'll be able to wear them "streetstyle" since the earcups are circular instead of oblong.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys!

Hmm.. I was gonna say AD700 also, but if this is for portability and you already have the V6 & don't want IEMs....

Only other options are ES7, RP15, and headband modded KSC75.

If you have a Wal-Mart near you that sells the $5 radio with headband that snaps perfectly onto the KScs, I'd definitely go that route. The headband could come down to the last notch like the V6, but I think it'd fit. ...If it doesn't, you're a conehead and need to use IEMs.

Yeah, I have checked WalMart for the SportRadio/Headphone pack but it seems that Lennox/Durabrand now includes only earbuds now, and has since phased out the ones with the actual headphones.

I'll be going out to Vegas tomorrow, and I see that there is a Equation Audio dealer there on Silver Street, so I'll see if I can demo some RP-15's. If not, I'll probably just go with some SJ5's or K81's and, worst case, wear them "street style".

Alright, so I'm back from Vegas, and after calling New World Audio on Silver Ave, it seems that they were either closed or aren't an actual retailer. Strange stuff...

Anyways, I think I am going to go for the Koss Portapros over the Senn PX100 for a portable open can, and the Audio-Technica ATH-SJ5 as the portable closed can.

Can anyone give me any feedback as far as how bendable the headband of the SJ5 is compared to the K81? I figure I will probably have to bend the headband a bit for a better fit, so does anyone know which one is easier to bend and keep bent?

Any further suggestions or opinions are always welcome!

Thanks!
