Hello Everyone! Will the Sennheiser HD650s sound too good compared to my Audio-Technica's I just bought?

First off, a little bit about me and my music background. I've been lurking for about 2 weeks, and I'm a 17 male beginner/entry level audiophile obviously.  I love music, all kinds except screamo and most rock.  I mainly listen to pop, alternative, punk, and some post-hardcore and classical. I don't really have a favorite band, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be One Direction (No, I'm not gay).

So, my first pair of "real" headphones were the Monster Ntunes. I know what you're thinking, and yes they are one of the worst headphones in their price range probably, but I was misguided.  I broke those about 8 months after having them, and then I went without headphones for 2 months to be sure I bought a quality pair of headphones, and then I decided on getting the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s for $116. First out of the box I was slightly disappointed.  They didn't seem as alive as I thought they would be, but then after just a few hours they came to life.  They are almost everything I imagined.  I would say I have a VERY STRONG emotional attachment to them now.  It's kind of sad really.

I now plan on getting the Sennheiser HD650s in a month or so for home listening because of the sound leakage. I've read that these are phenomenal headphones, and I expect a lot out of them with a nice amp. If you want to make suggestions please do, but I will read other threads on how to properly amp them. I'm worried that once I get the Sennheiser HD650s I won't even want to listen to my Audio-Technica's at school and whatnot because I will see the quality as bad.  That's what I did when I just had a pair of apple earbuds.  I didn't even listen to music because the quality wasn't up to my standards. I'm just wondering what to expect out of the Sennheiser HD650s really and don't want to become disappointed in the Audio-Technicas I just bought.

P.S.  I mostly listen to Pop music, and would like to not spend under $500.  If any of you have an suggestions other than the Sennheiser HD600s or HD650s that would be much appreciated. I don't want to be misguided and go mainstream again.

I haven't heard the M50, but I can say, that the biggest difference you will experience is going from closed to open headphones. While I'm writing this I listen to Senheiser Momentum (closed) and, as I'm used to my Q701 (open), I can say closed cans really sound worse. Be careful about HD650, I think of them as specific headphones as they are very warm and I can really feel the so-called vail, that (at least to me) make them a bit boring. I don't know what kind of music signiture you like, but did you look at the Hifiman HE-400. I honestly never heard them, but if I was looking for headphones in that price range, the HE-400 would be on top of my list.

it should, but i've never heard either

portability might be a deciding factor here, you don't want to haul around an amp and a pair of big cans when you're on the move.

I wish I could try the hifi man headphones and sennheisers somewhere.  I don't mind carrying around the Audio-Technica's at all, but carrying around the sennheisers, which don't fold, and an amp the size of a smartphone can become a hassle, so that is why they will be for home use. I'm just concerned I will hate the Audio-Technicas once I get a pair of open-back cans.

And honestly my music signature changes based on the song.  When I'm listening to post-hardcore and punk, I like that bass kick, but when listening to almost anything else I prefer the mids over anything else then treble and bass last.

Yes, trying out headphones can be quite hard, which can be pretty annoying as they are not cheap. I don't like the HD650 too much, as they are too smooth and dark for my tastes, so I can't really recomend it. Also I haven't heard the HE-400, and I don't have a habit of recommending headphones I didn't hear. Just trying to give some alternatives.

Maybe if you look at previous threads would help. Something like that:

BTW, what is your source? You will probably have to upgrade it with an amp and maybe a DAC, when you are buying some higher tier headphones.
