Hello to all of you, as you can see, this is my first post, so go easy! hehe

Right, I have an older set of Sennheiser HD 590's, and I'm kind of happy with them, but they was an upgrade from an older set of HD 580's, that I managed to buy for £59!!! brand new, which I somehow destroyed burning them in!!! (as you can imagine, I was a sick as a dog over that!)

I remember the first time that I used the HD 580's, they had a lovely warm but detailed sound, with a real punch in the low end bass, which is important to me!

When I destroyed the 580's, I was forced to replace them with the HD 590's, as the 580's were no longer available. But I have never been as happy with those as I was the first time that I listened to the 580's. the 590's are louder, due to the much lower impedance, they seem to sound a little light weight compared to the 580's.

I have just managed to find an online retailer that has the 580's in stock, and on sale for £95 inc VAT and free delivery.

So my question is this...

How long do you think the 580's need to be burned in for, and at what sort of volume do you recommend? As I am NOT going to be frying these in a hurry!

Also, are there any mods for these, or the 590's to help improve the sound, appart from new cables and pre-amps?

Just use them at normal volume. Don't do anything else.

I'd say most changes happen in the first week or so. Don't take 'burn in' that literally. Volume shouldn't be too low, but not more than normal listening levels. Adjust the volume with the phones on your head.

ASKdirect.co.uk has the HD600 available for £120 just for your interest.

Were you literally trying the BURN these in? ("I love the smell of fried drivers in the morning"?) Just turn the volume knob just a bit past what your normal listening level. CHECK FOR SOUND ESPECIALLY BASS DISTORTION CAUSED BY UNDERPOWERING. Underpowering phones while burning in is a very bad idea. Leave to cook.

Hmmm, yes, I *DID* burn them in! I would like to think that I would not do something that stupid again!

Half of the problem was, that I had no knowledge of how to burn them, or any other headphone in.

I am learing all the time, and this forum is a great place to help me out.

Thanks to all of you so far for answering my questions. But one question remains... How long does the burn-in require? Would 60 Hours continuous do the trick? Or longer?

Oh, thanks for the info for the HD 600's, but I have been put off them because I love my bass, and have read that the 600's are slightly lighter sounding than the 580's.

Hi Wallijonn, 2 reasons really:

1. I blew them up, so that surely would make the warranty void. And had visions of it costing me an arm and a leg to get Sennheiser to repair them.

2. I payed only £59 for them, and they was the last that retailler had, and he offered me a good deal on the 590s, which I thought (and he!) would be a better headphone!

Sheesh! Forget about the damned burn-in! Just play them at normal volumes! Anything that's going to happen will happen!

The way I see it, there really is no (or at least shouldn't be) special burn in procedure. The thing with 'burning in' is that headphones, when they're new, will improve often considerably after they've been playing for a while. Therefore you should wait until they've clocked a few hours and not draw any conclusions when they're fresh out of the box. If you're impatient, you can let them play continuously on their own for the first few days, that's 'burning in'. But the point is not to torture them. There is no magic moment when 'burn in' is completed. It's a gradual process, and over time the performance will stbilize more and more until you won't notice much or any change anymore. I'd say most happens in the first 100-200 hours...

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply!

I am just looking forward to getting them, should be here in a day or 2.

And, I'm more than ready to listen to them "out of the box" hehe!

Once again, thanks people.
