Hope this isn't too much of a plug

www.mosaicrecords.com

Great jazz reissue label, a good opportunity for jazz fans and newbies alike. Buy one of their sets, and for each disc in the set you get $5 off a CD from their more extensive jazz catalog at TrueBlue.

I just placed my order:
Grachan Moncur - Mosaic Select (3 cd set)
Lee Morgan - Infinity
Cecil Taylor - Jazz Advance
J.R. Monterose - In Action

Their sets may seem expensive ($16/CD, $18/LP, $13/CD for Mosaic Select sets) but they are the result of tireless research, and are accompanied by excellent essays and photos (except for the new Mosaic Selects they come in LP-sized boxes, with 12" booklets). The remastering jobs are also usually quite good, and every release is a limited edition. If you're curious but it seems confusing, let me know what you're interested in and I'm obviously willing to make recommendations.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered the Django Reinhardt set earlier this year. I was thinking about picking up the Joe Pass set, maybe now would be the time to buy it.

Is there an online catalogue of everything you can use the $5 coupons on?

Go for it, I've got the Pass set and it's very well done. The Johnny Smith is pretty incredible as well.

I second both.

I also recommend the Louis Prima and Wingy Manone set.. Yes, that Louis Prima. He was a gifted vocalist and trumpet player before his 1950's hits. The find of the set is the Wingy Manone stuff. Great entertainer and trumpet player. Transfers are good, too.

(FCJ recommended them to me...) And I have to stress that in addition to sounding great, these sets are beautiful. A great buy for the money. The photos in the booklets are an incredible treat.

As are all Mosaic sets. And they hold their value. Check out ebay to see what they fetch when they go out of print.
