I'll keep it simple... straight off the HeadRoom website:

Beyer DT880: 5 Stars. A new headphone rivals the Sennheiser 600 for top-dog.

Beyerdynamic has just released their new DT 880 to challenge Sennheiser for the top spot and, by golly, they’ve done a darned good job. The 880 are clean and clear, with extended highs and lows, and good behavior in between. Although the HD 600 might image a bit better and seem a little more coherent, the beyers are a bit more intimate and less laid-back. If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line can these days, these just may be the cans for you.
The 880 comes packages in a nice aluminum box. It has a single sided coiled cable (left side) for ease of use. The ear pads are soft velour and the headband is nicely padded and both are easily replaced.

Isolation: 3
Comfort: 5

Team Sennheiser's days are numbered

Hehe, I had considered re-purchasing a Sennheiser HD 590.

But at $200 at a Tweeter retail store, I was very doubtful about it. And now, I think my next headphone purchase won't be the HD 590 at all - but either this (Beyer DT 880) or a Sony MDR-CD3000.

Oh, by the way, I'm sure that to my ears the Beyer 880 will be a refreshing break from the laid-back, slightly veiled presentation of the Sennheiser 600 and the overly punchy, Grating detail of the Gratos.

It seems like most Senn HD 600s owners are fan of clasical music. People who like rock say they are to laid back or do not have enough punch. How about the DT 880? Is there a certain type of music they excell with, or are they just a good all around headphone?

My take: the current hype for the DT 880 is about 45% based on the fact that they are truly worthy competition for the HD 600, and about 55% because they're the current "flavor of the month."

I've been listening to the DT 880 for a little over a day, and I like them a lot. I'm going to have to do a lot more listening before I can post extensive comments. But my initial impressions are not that they are "better" than the HD 600 -- in some areas the HD 600 are still clearly better -- but that they provide another great-sounding option. People who dislike the HD 600's presentation may prefer the DT 880, but will have to give up some of the HD 600's advantages in the process.

That's a pretty forced reading of their comments.

I still would like to hear them.

I'm boxing up my 880's now and shipping them off to T.H. I find myself wondering why I agreed to this sale when the Beyers' have been nothing short of fantastic. I really enjoy them with the JMT maxed meta at about 3/4 volume. Warm but not too relaxed, lows with solid bass, realisticly placed mids with ideal balance,drums-ahhh-the drums, clear crisp highs to round out the listening mood, completely non-fatiqueing (unless I turn up the volume to head pounding) and wonderful soundstage, just to give a few thoughts that come to mind.

Why DID I agree to sell them? Now I remember, I've read too many reviews on the sony cd3000's,and I just have to try them. If they aren't what I think they will be, its either the Grado rs1's (I'm not sure about them,I hear they are quite "bold?" or can be fatiqueing)or another 880. Anyway,I have no reservations about buying the 880's new and never parting with them again.

IMHO,for what its worth...........................

As for the music- Phil Collins,Stevie Ray Vaughn,Moody Blues,Al Dimeola-to name a few.

Please, Mr. Scarpitti, spare us the suspense and reveal to us what that perfect headphone is that begins with "s' and ends with "x."

Must be yours, then: Statix' headphone!

Or maybe it's sex... No, that's neither a headphone, nor is it always perfect...

Well, maybe Sonax - no, that was a polish... Oh, I don't know. But Mike will tell, anyway...

P.S.: Anyway, it's good that HeadRoom also offers the DT880, now.
