Hi everyone,

I currently have the HD598 which I am very pleased with, but now I want to get a headphone that is more suited for EDM. The main thing I want is to be able to hear the distinct layers in trance or house. A lot of the stuff I listen to (progressive house, trance, DnB) is quite complex (lots of layers) and sometimes sounds muddled through the HD598.

When I had the AD700 a while back, I could recognize these distinct layers (something I can't do with the HD598), but the anemic bass made it hard to enjoy the music. I'm assuming a headphone with faster drivers than the HD598 would provide better instrument separation (and hence better layer separation).

I also would like more bass (and sub-bass) presence than the HD598. A large soundstage is a bonus, but not required as the HD598's soundstage is excellent.

My budget is up to $300. Thanks for any suggestions!

HE-400 is your best bet for layering and bass.  You might find a used one for around 350.

A beyerdynamic like the DT990 or DT880 is another good bet.  They provide the coloration for edm, and have a very good decay.

Yeah I was looking at the HE400 but $400 is just too much. I also wanted to try the Beyers but I would have to buy them first so I could listen to them.

EDIT: Which models of the DT990 and DT880 are the best for EDM? I know there are like 4 models of each so its pretty confusing.
