Yes, I have a big head. I have to pull out both DT880 earpads fully to fit my head properly. But that's not the matter.
My ears stick out quite a bit. The upper earlobes touch the foam inside the cups. First hour, they're fine; then my earlobes start to itch more and more, forcing me to pull off the headphones for a while.
I can exchange for the K701, no charge; however I'm quite worried about the K701 fit size / earpad depth issue. Maybe other headphones at this price?
Or, are there any DT880 replacement pads that are much deeper (say an inch) and still made of that silver velour?
Or am I forever cursed with this problem?
Thanks for your help in advance!

if your ears don't fit the cd3k, it means you're not human

I personally couldn't stand the drivers foam touching my ears on the beyer 770's...totally unbearable, I can't even imagine those Grados

Sony MDR-CD3000... hmm... $700... beyond my budget...
If I can find one below $300 (return my DT880), would it 1) be driven properly with a portable amp, 2) has almost same sound as DT880, and 3) fit my very large head with that automatic headband?

increasing the distance between the drivers and your ears will make the sound hollow.

I was pointing at the cd3k as personal experience, I'm sure there's other phones w/ huge cups that don't touch your ears at all(the automatic headband is perfectly OK for my big head, it's actually more of an issue for small ones)...and I really wonder how the hell ppl can stand Grado's foam touching their ears that much

BTW, second hand cd3k's usually go for $500, and they'll do fine on a cheap amp but of course they'll scale as well w/ better amp.

Cut and tucked thick (4mm) waste cable pieces under the pads. A lot better, now just barely touchs earlobes when I wiggle them. Sound has improved a bit, actually, with a more open, wider sound stage (on the horizontal axis), slightly recessed highs (just a bit) and a tad bit more bass impact. Not hollow. Anyway, sweet results! Thanks, Green. You might have saved me a bunch of troubles.

^^ Do I cut open the pad... or just put it under the pads (tuck it in)?

Tuck it in. It'll probably change the sound like leeperry says but I dont think it will be that drastic a change.

edit: see you did it already.
Enjoy

If this doesn't work for you in the long run, there are slightly thicker pads (if I recall correctly) from Jmoney for the DTXXX series. Otherwise, the ATH-ADXXX series is enormous.

I think so.. my w5000s have nice leather ones. You can get the replacement w5000 ones and put them on the ad900 (note: those pads are a bit expensive)

Talking about the W5000...
Do you have any fit issues with that? Most people cannot get a good fit, including dummy heads.
I hope that the problem does not exist with other 3D-Wing structures.

Yeah, most people have problems without modding (including elastic bands across the 3d wings).

I think the assumption here is that most audiophiles are morbidly obese (not too far from the truth)

On my A700 it's plastic, a rubbery type plastic. I expected metal too though.

Would assume the same for the AD900.
