OK, I love headphones, but I know nothing about the crappy phones with microphones attached. My friend insists on them for skype phone service, etc. I gave him my old M audio transit, as he needed a sound card. (Icemat brand with 2 mini plugs, one mic one headphones)

Problem is there is only one green plug on the Transit for phones, so no where to plug in mic. I cant seem to plug the phones plug into Transit and mic into the onboard mobo pci section at same time, as it would be using 2 cards at the same time.

Please point me to any adapter/software/whatever to help utilize mic'd headphones through the Transit. I am a noobie to these, and really want a cheap and easy fix, as my friend is not an audiophile and listens to 128 bit mp3s, lol.

He is moving soon, so I would like to help him asap.

The transit has a separate mic input - it's the little white socket. You might have to adjust the recording level in the windows mixer which you get to by double clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray. You also might have to adjust the settings for the Transit in the Control Panel for 'Transit USB'.

I'll have to have another go at it when I go to his place. I think I maxed all the volumes, but may have overlooked one. I know I tried plugging the mic into the white socket though. Its probably some dumb detail I overlooked. I guess I'll report back after I get to try it again. Thanks.

Just as a sanity check, and since there's a mic input on the mobo, see if the mic works on that. From my past experience, getting a mic to work was a mixed bag. Once I just plugged in a headset for skype and it just worked. Then I switched to an AudioAdvantage and I had to work for hours to get skype working. That's Windwoes for ya: the ultimate in non-deterministic computing. And again, assuming Windwoes, reinstall the drivers. Also, IIR 'woes is supposed to support >1 soundcards. Skype and/or other apps may not be able to, tho.
Also, make sure the mic is enabled for the transit and that the gain boost is set and that the rec vol is up. Woe's sometimes likes to change parameters on a whim.
These are very basic, but simple things are worth checking. I have a friend who is a very advanced pc user and programmer. We did driver, bios work, filesystems, etc. He had a problem, called tech support about it. 1st question was: is it plugged in? After being indignant for a second, he checked and it wasn't. The power cord fell out of the back when he swapped out a scsi card. D'OH!

it actually is possible to use two different audio renderers.

control panel>performance and maintenence>Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices>Sound and Audio Devices. and then you select the onboard sound device as the device to use for recording.
