Hi everyone,

About three years ago I bought some Audio technica ATH - M50 (the old model that you cannot change the audio cable). Since a few months the end of audio cable is slowly dying. I really enjoyed thoses headphone. Here are the things that I liked about them :

- Good isolation / passive noise cancelling
- Very solid (exept for the cable)
- Great portabillity
- Good overall sound with punchy bass
- Work well with almost any style of music

So, more about what I am looking for,

I'm looking for similars heaphones, but they must be a upgrade to the ATH-M50 and around 200-300$.
Also, keep in mind that I live in Canada.

Here are the "must have" features :

- Closed back
- Good isolation : No sound or very little must leak.
- Portability / Solidity: They must survive the casual bus rides and be place inside a backpack without getting damage over the years.
- Must fit a large part of the music that I listen to :
Mainly Rock (Classic Rock, Prog Rock, Heavy Rock) and a bit of Rap, Classical music

Here are the "Bonus" features :

- Good bass : Doesn't need to have extra bass, just some headphones that reproduce well the bass guitar sounds.
- Good looking

Ok, so I did a little research myself and found two models that seems to be a good fit for me :

ATH-MSR7BK (Link)
I really enjoyed my last pair of Audio Technica

Sony MDR-1A (Link)

I have never been a fan of Sony in general, but I read great things about these headphones, still i'm not sure.

I'm looking for ideas and guidance so I can enjoy music for the next years to come !
You are welcome to post heaphones that you think are very good, but doesn't respect every aspects of the description that I gave below.

*Sorry if I made alot of mistakes, english is my second language.

I would like to add that I'm also looking for a portable DAC.

What caught my eyes looking for DAC is the AudioQuest Dragonfly v1.2

Anyone would recommend it?

Would it be a good fit for the two Headphones that I listed bellow?

I am also in the same boat as you, looking at Headphones in that price range and live in canada. I have narrowed my search down to two Headphones, the Akg k545 and the Soundmagic hp150. Both are buyable with our currency for that price range. Akg's on amazon.com and Sound magic on Amazon.ca. I also want the dragonfly as it will work with my Galaxy S5 off the phones micro USB 3 port. Hope this helps!

I don't know if the new MDR-100aap is available in Canada yet, but it's an upgrade to the MDR-1A and everyone is saying it sounds much better than the 1A, including me, I have both.

For a portable DAC is strongly suggest the Fiio X1, it's way more powerful than the Dragonfly and it's also a music player. I had the Dragonfly also.

The X1 is perfect for either the 1A or the 100aap

I am now considering the MDR-100aap,
Thank you !

As for the DAC, I don't need a player, because i'm already using my phone as a player with a 128gb card full of lossless music. (So I will be using a USB 2.0 to Micro USB OTG Adapter Cable to on my phone)

Also, I think that Dragonfly's DAC will be a better fit for me since I will also use it on my PC.

Whats do you mean by "it's way more powerful than the Dragonfly" ?

Thanks for the suggestions, but the Soundmagic hp150 are just too big and don't seems to be as portable as the others.
As for the  Akg k545, I might be considering them. I'm looking at reviews. Thanks.

Hi there! May I ask if the headphones have good bass? And how are the mids and highs? I need a pair of headphones on the go for my iPod Nano.
