i am looking for a nice pair of headphones under 50 dollars. i will use them for occasionally listening with my pc and somtimes while just sitting somwhere or mowing the lawn. they cant be HUGE because they need to fit in a bookbag easily, but i want a good sounding set. i have purchased several pairs which i am uunsatisfied with. i dont care about the over the head type or behind the head. I can even deal with earbuds. main thing is that i want good sound! i bought a $15 pair of phillips behind the head earphones a while ago and they sounded ok, much better than some of the 30 dollar headphones ive tried. does radio shack sell good headphones?

basic guidlines- under 40 or 50 bux, fairly comfortable, and great sound.

please help.

Koss KSC-35: The best comfort, sound, and all-purpose usability for under $50.

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about... oh wait you're only spending $50

. Stop before it gets worse!

As everyone has said, the Koss 35's are great. If there's a Rite Aid near you, the Philips HD 170 are available for $9.99 right now. These two phones are the best you can get for this range. You should also though keep an eye on the For Sale forum as deals come up there pretty often.

One final idea - if you're willing to go up $12, the Grado SR-60's will kill both the above choices.

Well if you are going to use them with cutting the lawn, you would be limited to closed cans (if you want to listen at safe levels at least). I use etys myself for that task and they work great, but due to your price range i can't recommend those. The Philips cans those of you mentioned are closed right? So those would be good. Otherwise I don't know of all that many good closed cans under $50.

The Pro-35 (330-1222) is pretty good, but wait until it goes on sale for $20 as it should do relatively soon (hopefully). Or look for the equivalent on Amazon.com, the Koss KTX-Pro which is also near $20. For RadioShack earbuds the 33-1991 is decent. A bit bright sounding, and the buds themselves are a bit large. For good sounding headphones at RadioShack that's about all I can recommend in your price range that I have actually tried.

The Sennheiser MX500 have the best sound I have heard in earbuds. You can pick them up at Virgin Megastore or Amazon. The Koss KSC-35 earclip headphones are often recommended and are $30 directly from Koss.

I don't like the radio shack phones (pro 25) that got all the "audiophile cheapskate" raves. They're comfy and cute, but artificially and headache-ingly boomy, though the mids and highs are good. Of course, if using them outdoors, since so much sound leaks in, they might be o.k.

I personally like the Audio Technica ATH-M3X for around $25 mail order. They call them closed and in fact they're a *little* closed and leak less than most supra-aurals. They're fairly comfortable. Most material is there, but midrange stuff is a tiny bit coloured when compared to more expensive phones.

For a more closed set that's super comfy, that sounds punchy and bright, but is lean in the bass, the Sony MDR 7502 at $49 ain't too bad. In fact, it's the only headphones at any cost that sound good to me with the bass enhancement of a Walkman engaged.

Between these two, it's a toss-up as far as I'm concerned.

I don't agree with the post that recommends spending more for the Grado 60's. Not if you wanna throw 'em in a backpack, take 'em outdoors and sweat in 'em, etc. Those are better for stationary listening at home, office, etc.

Cheers,
Michael

IMO, there's simply no competition for the Koss KSC-35 -- it competes with many headphones in the <$100 range.

However, if you want to listen while mowing the lawn -- which I HIGHLY advise against if you want to save your hearing -- you want something closed. The Sennheiser PX 200 are my second-favorite in this range. The Sony EX70 are OK-sounding, but offer probably the best isolation in this price range.

No highs, no lows, must be those!

That phrase within the two "evil grin" smileys describes exactly what I had heard from those 7502's.

I'm going to go along with the pack and recommend the ksc-35s which are very difficult to beat for under $50. However, I would advise AGAINST mowing the lawn with headphones on. A few hours of boredom is not worth risking your hearing!
