I'm looking for a decent set of headphones that will really compliment my Marantz 2230 receiver. I've been using a pair of Sennheiser HD433's, albeit okay, they can be excessively bright & no real detail for Classical music. Back in the '90's I had a pair of (I think) Sennheiser HD430's. These had a detacheable cord & were a good all round head set & paid about $125(CDN) I'm on a budget as payong the mortgage & everything else which goes along with owning a condo. The absolute max I'd go now would be about the same. Ideas?? Vintage headphones would also be considered

AKG K501 are great for classical, and certainly within that price range if you get them used, but I'm not sure whether or not your receiver will be adequate to power them.

I would look for something like used K501s or HD580s, these should give the best bang/buck. (K401 and the preceding K400 and K500 wouldn't be bad either.) I wouldn't go any more vintage than, say, HD560s, or '80s DT880s and DT990s. The cans you had back in the 90s may have been HD530 IIs or somesuch, never heard any but presumably these wouldn't be bad either. HD430s are really old vintage cans from the early '80s, with a sonic signature best described as 'ouch'.

Edit: Oh, and if you should come across some HD590s, consider these too.

Thanks, I've actually been impressed with a pair of older Koss earbuds I had given to me. While certainly not the end all & be all, they're not bad. My dream headphones are the AKG K240's but new ones are way out of my league budget wise. I actually thought about bidding on a pair of Koss ESP.6 headphones, on E-Bay but a bit leary of that vintage.

just get Koss KSC-75's and be happy

I've bought Grado SR225's and Beyer DT880 and with both i seem to find things that really put me off them whereas the KSC75's are like and amazing good sound signature (with no bad characteristics imo), just possibly less detail than the higher end cans
