I'm looking for some headphones to use with my portable unamped. I've got a pair of PortaPros right now, but would rather something closed or an affordable pair of canal phones.

It would also have to be something I could find in Vancouver, Canada. I was looking for a pair of PX 200s, but haven't found them yet.

Another option would be SR-60s, but how would they work in a noisy environment?

sr-60s- wide open phones like those = awful in portable situations. you'll hear more ambient sound than music.

you could try out sony ex71s at the lowest price (and perf IMO) rung or the shure e2c.

px200s are good for portable except they colour the sound with their darkness and recessed vocals.

I could probably find the EX-71s but I'm not sure how happy I would be with them soundwise.

I also don't know of anywhere I could find the E2Cs. I may have just found a place I can get PX 200s from tho.

Another question, how would these sound in a noisy environment with a Nomad IIc? I believe it has a relatively weak opamp. But I would rather stay more portable and not have to carry around an amp as well.

Silver: Sorry, I've only used this name in Raven Shield before.

V-crap. Need I say more?

Specifically, the ENTIRE Sony MDR-V### series of headphones is grossly overpriced for the performance that those headphones deliver. I wouldn't pay even $20 USD/$30 CDN for the MDR-V300, given its boomy, muddy sound and flimsy, easily breakable construction.

I am perhaps the only one here who recommends Philips HP550. There have been contradictory reports from America that these are not even fully closed and that they sound hollow. Mine are fully closed and to me they sound quite good especially for their 25 Euro price. I guess they are discontinued now but you should still be able to find them around. The usual recommendations in your case would be Sony V6 or D66. Haven't heard the D66. The V6 is almost a classic.

In ear such as the E1 or E2 might be for you. Also, check out the PX200.

the px200 should have no problem going loud even when run directly out of the weakest portables.

I haven't found any Philip's headphone stuff in Canada

er...how much are you willing to spend?

if you're looking for closed headphones, you could check out the Beyerdynamic DT231 [i think you can find them at Commercial Electronics just north of the Burrard St bridge...]

The AKG K171S and 271S can also be powered by a portable....as well as the Sony 7506 and the Senn HD280 [which I doubt you'll want to wear outside]...you can audition them at Tom Lee.....

Hope that helps!

The PX 200's would be good but be prepared for a bit of a burn in period, and they are a little bit of a pain since you have to figure out the best positioning for you which could take a few days.

and i forgot to mention if you have a large head you can forget about using the px200s - the band is rather short IMO.
