Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution

Jude said that the new Meze Empyrean will cost more than $3000. I'm out!

I was struggling as to whether or not to go to CanJam this year, and seeing this headphone is making its debut I was very tempted to go,but if the asking price is 3k I will pass on CanJam(and these headphones)too.

Crazy! But how can you go from a pair of $309 headphones to $3000?
Theyre taking a page out of Fang's playbook.
In six months they will release a Empyrean v2 and then after that a 60k electrostat.

Yes it's very disappointing. The Empyrean is the only new headphones that I was excited to hear this year and now the hype is dead for me because of the stupid price.

I still hope you decide to go, there's always lots to see & hear.

Personally I'm itching to hear both the AFO (should be killer for metal I think) as well as the one I'm most excited (and scared...or at least my wallet is) to hear, the Auteur. I'm also bringing my Eikon to play around with some tube amps. This should be fun...hope to see you there.

Well, at least @jinxy245 is still with me, lol! I’m ready to hop on a plane and rock some CanJam!

Pricing will only get worse for the top end, daps dacs hps and amps, but does seem to be getting better price to performance on the mid fi range. Used market is also pretty great for folks willing to wait it out and get "older" tech. Hifiman lost me completely with their pricing after the he1000, not gonna buy anything from them unless it's am older model, he6/re262/272. Pretty ballsy of meze to garner such a following in the low/mid fi market only to hop immediately up to 3k, I just don't understand spending that much on a headphone. But, to each his own I suppose. It's really seemed to get insane the last 3 years or so on the top end market of headphones. The pricing of the original orpheus/jade/stax sr009 was always insane to me but those were rarities and a very tiny amount of hps in that price range, now it looks like it'll be common for these bigger manufacturers because at this point they know they can get people to pay it, kinda sad really. Back to topic, i spent a good 2 hours at home with my modded denon d2k on my sx1010 listening to a variety of prog metal today, never even went over to my he4, just left the d2k on, they really are special.

You have some images of your 1010? This thread needs some vintage receiver porn!

I came pretty close to buying a 1010 a couple years back, and now with six receivers in my home I decided to grab a McIntosh 4100 and that will be my last(good luck)vintage receiver.

Being a metalhead, I like to think that I can invest anything I want in anything I want just to headbang.

Like, if I want a bike, even an expensive one, and if I can afford it, then why not? I'd love to rock the streets with a bike.

Same for headphones. If I see something I love with metal, why not? I'd love to rock my metal music with the best there is!

Always do all you can for your enjoyment, price is nothing in the stream of time, only memories and your own enjoyment matters.

Spend too much in the wrong place and the stream of time may outlet into the river of regret.

I totally agree.

If I hazard a guess, I'd say Meze is looking to be taken 'seriously', and you often need a good statement piece to do that. If they kept to the 300's, there's a TON of competition, and more of it closer to home (Meze is based in Romania I believe).

To jump right to the 3K ballpark is ballsy, I agree, but it could pay off if it's a killer headphone.

~1980 I purchased a Pioneer receiver, can't recall the model. Think it was 50-60wpc, a lot for the time. It looked very similar to your X1010, though not as tall. Had that very pretty, lounge-lite display, wonderfully weighted analog volume pot & frequency seek pot for FM, etc. A couple years later, in search of more power, I upgraded to a Yamaha integrated. By then the Pioneer had some issues, so I took it to a local guy for repair (which he did very well). He told me the Pioneer would some day be a classic & I should hold onto it. Instead, I gave it to my brother, who still has it & uses it every day (w/just 1 other repair needed in all those years).

I visited him last week & fondled this now "classic" receiver like the old days. It's a joy to use & sounds very good. Glad it's still in the family.
