Headphones for metal music - ultimate solution
Dec 2, 2024 at 3:39 PM Post #12,421 of 12,505
I have come back to the Beyer T1.3s (I was an early adopter and returned them): the headphones that offered to me the best rendition with Metallica albums, even with the old ones, not just with the Black album... They also work very well with some Stratovarius albums... I have to try with other sub-genres, because I hated the sound with Tristania (a gothic metal band I love, I noticed sibilance in the vocals  never noticed with any other cans I tried...)

I'll report about how they work (for me) with other metal sub-genres, I'm waiting for them to arrive here :L3000:

I also remember that they work incredible well with videogames :relaxed:

Hi,

This is my first post on this forum, nice to meet you :)

Sorry for digging up this thread.

I'd like to ask you for some suggestions about headphones.

I know it's hard, but I need universal headphones. 60% of the music I listen to is rock and metal (black, death, sludge, doom, punk/hardcore, etc.) and 40% is various electronics (ambient, dark ambient, trip-hop, etc.) and jazz.

I prefer a more musical than analytical sound. Headphones don't have to be dark, but they certainly can't be light either. I need the bass to go low and be plentiful and have impact, but it must be of good quality, controlled and must not overwhelm the midrange. Midrange cannot be withdrawn, I want the vocals to be full, have body, and the guitar riffs to be meaty. I am quite sensitive to high tones and sibilants, so I don't want the treble to be too exposed, sharp or harsh. The top may be a bit withdrawn, but I would like it to be detailed nonetheless. So I'm looking for headphones that sound dynamic, engaging, and with a good soundstage. I don't want them to sound "thin" or too analytical, but I also don't want them to be blankety and muddy. First of all, the listening sessions are supposed to be pleasant and suitable for listening to various genres of music.

Despite such requirements, the choice is still quite large. However, I will limit myself to a few headphones models, I have my eye on:

- Sivga P2 Pro.
- Meze 99 Classics.
- Master&Dynamic MH40.

I also thought about Sennheiser HD650, HD660S2, but I am afraid that there will be too little bass.

By the way, I would like to emphasize that I have been conducting research for a long time and I also looked through Head-fi quite intensively. We all have different hearing organs and different preferences, so the number of combinations and impressions associated with them is endless, so I hope you understand the reason for adding a post to this thread, i can't start my own yet :)

Oh, I don't really have the opportunity to listen to headphones, so I have to choose well :)

Budget is $500 maximum.

FiiO FT1.

Or if you really want darker headphones with good bass, a used Audeze LCD-2 or LCD-2 Closed.

This may not be helpful because it’s somewhat outside your budget but it sounds to me like you are describing the ZMF Bokeh Closed. It’s amazing with rock/metal as well as electronic and it does pretty good with jazz as well. Very full-bodied sound with impactful bass and relaxed highs. Definitely not thin or analytical and the soundstage is very holographic for a closed back. It’s outside your budget but if you extend the upper limit a bit you might be able to score a nice second-hand pair.

I read a little about FiiO FT1 and it looks like I might like them. I saw a comparison of these FiiOs to Meze 99 Classics, apparently they sound similar.

Yes, I was considering these LCDs, maybe I'll find a used one.

Yes, ZMF are outside the assumed budget, but I will read about them and write them down as a recommendation.

Yes, a used ZMF Bokeh/Atticus/Eikon would also be a solid choice. I didn't mention them because I don't think you will find any of those for under $500.

I believe the FT1 sounds at least as good, if not better than the 99 Classics for half the price.

100% agree with this if you’re willing to stretch. Bokeh Closed could be a one-and-done for many people.

This is quite strong recommendation, i'll look at them closer.

ill have a FT1 ill be listing in the classifieds shortly. They are pretty great for metal, but I have an Emu Teak and an LCD-X so they cover the bases.

That said, LCD-X can be found used for $650ish. They are amazing and may be worth saving up for.

The E-MU Teak is my absolute go-to recommendation under $500, but it might be a bit too bright for @Czort taste

Hi all. I'm looking for my next cans in the $500 range. Being honest with myself, I realize that I listen to 80~90% metal, and it is mostly really fast stuff like death metal, tech death, brutal death, prog death, and tech thrash. My reference gear is the AKG k702, which I am kinda ok ish with the sound, specially after EQ, but not with the fit. I love listening to metal on my Thieaudio Hype 4s, and Simgot Supermix 4.
That said, I would like to expand and listen to other genres, but I still want something that works really well for metal.
Another requirement is that the HPs have to be comfortable and not too heavy. I get pain on my neck if I wear heavy HPs stuff too long.

What headphones should I look into?
I'm just about to pull the trigger on some Arya Stealth, since I wanna try planars. But for that budget I could also get a Sony mdr-m1 and a refurbished Ananda or something. I also considered the Focal Azurys and the DCA Aeon X closed (but I heard bad things abour their pads).
Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

If you can stretch your budget Noire X is fantastic.
