Hey, I'm looking for a set of cans in around the $100-$200 USD price range, and I was very interested in the Sennheiser HD 598s but I heard the bass was pretty shallow. I don't want a particularly bass heavy set of cans, but I do want something that would give me that punchy bass sound. My environment is conducive to a open style (like the HD 598s). So with all that out of the way, what would you recommend I buy in my price range?

Grab Beyer DT990 Pro, which should cost about 150 bucks and match for your fav genre with plenty of bass.

In this forum, Schiit Audio's Magni/Modi combo and JDS O2/ODAC are popular entry DAC/amp combo.

i agree with the BEYER rec although I would go with Hd600. I am partial to Senn though so please consider that when you read this.

Re DAC. See if you can find PS Audio DLIII. This was the best DAC i had for the money. it totally has an analogue sound sig and it is very nice even with the at times less accessible IDM (i.e. Autechre or later Apex twin releases). I know that they are out of production, but if you see one used for sale, snatch it!!!

Have you heard anything about the mayflower O2/DAC combo?

I'm pretty sure those are the same as the JDS version, aside from minor cosmetic differences. For the DT990, I'd also think about the Schiit Vali or Little Dot 1+. The DT990 likes tubes (that is, as long you like tubes). Not that anything is wrong with a solid state amp though.
