Hey all. I'm new to Head-Fi and headphones as well. I've been looking around this site and I've learned a good deal about headphones. I'm trying to find some phones that will suit my tastes but also sound good. I won't be using an amp just yet, so I need some phones that will sound great without an amp.

Here are some things I'm looking for:
-They have to be closed.
-They need to be comfortable.
-I'll be using them for commuting, so portability is needed.
-I don't care too much about style, but it would be nice.
-Under $100

My sources are an 8G iPod Nano and my desktop. As for the music I listen to, I have mostly electronica, rock and j-pop with some orchestral from game soundtracks.

Here are some headphones I've considered:
AKG k81 dj
Audio Technica ES7 (People have said they're uncomfortable. Is there a way to make it more comfortable?)
Audio Technica FC700A

I am new to headphones also and just recieved my m50's on thur. I can say they sound great to me. I can't compare as this is my first pair. I will probably allow some time for break in and getting used to over the ear phones before I comment on fit and comfort. I had no Idea that there would be so much information and so many options. Happy hunting.

For $40, get yourself a pair of Koss PortaPros. They're a cheap but dynamic introduction to headphones. If you find yourself restless after that, staple your wallet shut or prepare for where this takes you.

No difference in SQ. Your preference.

The M50 is $150.

The K81DJ is nice. The PortaPro is as well.

Cool. I have another question. Should I get a straight or coiled cord?

Why do people keep suggesting the m50? it's over 130 anywhere I can find it.

The FC700A would be a great option. also check out the PX200-II, you're not going to get more portable than that without going for IEM/Earbuds or clip ons. These are both quite stylish, and very comfortable for me. They are both cans that work quite well for any genre. The FC700A has more bass, but is also less tight, with more detail but harsher highs.

Ebay is easily under $100 (Authorised AT sellers too).
Anyway, Nano, have you consider in-ears? They will isolate the most and are the most portable.

I've thought about them a little. I've used crappy Apple earbuds for a long time and they don't isolate at all. What are some notable in-ears you've heard of? Considering the MEElectronics Ai-M6.
