I love some warm sounding headphones, for contrast I currently own a pair of Blue Lolas, and previously had Sennheiser HD518s and loved them.
My current choices seem to be:
AKG K712
Hifiman HE-400i/s
Monoprice Monolith 1060
Monoprice Monolith 560
Sennheiser HD600 / 650

I would just go and buy the K712 because I love the orange accents, and for gaming the soundstage seems useful, but the planar tho...
So I just want to find out, is the whole planar thing as good as it seems? because I've heard that its good, but is it really THAT GOOD that I'd want to choose a planar over every other headphone in the price range?

I know the hifiman hasnt got that much bass, but it's apparently easily fixable with EQ.

If you are looking for warm from among your list, I would personally go the direction of the HD650. You can probably dismiss the K712 and the two HiFiMANs--they really don't qualify for your requirements. Have not heard the Monoprice--sorry. You will need an amp for the HD650. Not sure if you have one or not. Oh, and good planars--they are that good. :)

Technically, yes, there are good arguments for how good they are.

Subjectively, well, that depends.

I know the hifiman hasnt got that much bass, but it's apparently easily fixable with EQ.

And this is where subjectivity comes in. What's the point in making a technically better headphone with practically the flattest response for that wide range of 1000hz down to 10hz only for people to un-flatten it with EQ.

You might as well stick with the K712 as it has stronger bass. If you want even stronger there's always the HD650. Or if you want a relatively flat response but you can perceive more bass (because 10hz to 800hz is stronger than 1200hz to 10000hz, but the former is stronger than the latter) , there's the LCD-2C that you can save up for.

I've had the HD650 for about 6 months now. Last week I got a pair of M1060's to audition and I'm already setting up to let them go. The sound was good, but to me not as good as the HD650--but the HD650 comfort level for me was far superior. The HD650 was like wearing a glove--snug and light with no issues moving my head around. The M1060's were the complete opposite--heavy and cumbersome. I felt like I was balancing a plate on my head and if I looked down, they'd topple off.

K712 is slightly warm and slightly bright.
HD650 is warmer/fuller sounding and softer in the treble.

K712 tends to shine with higher quality recordings while HD650 is more forgiving and makes most music sound good.
