I'm probably going to buy some new headphones whenever I decide with player to buy, so I was wondering which options would be good for someone who listens to mainly metal and rock, but also likes acoustic stuff here and there.

I can go a little higher than $100 but I don't want to spend too much on them right now. I have PX100s at the moment.

I should have mentioned that I'm not going to use an amp, and I read that the Alessandro MS-1 would need one for MP3 players.

I was reading that people had to amp the MS-1 with an iPod because even at full volume they were only about 60% maxed. Not that I'd ever get an iPod, but I'm getting either a ZVM or a Zune.

I'll take a look at the Grados.

I use MS-1 out of my MP3 players (iRiver T30, Creative Zen Touch 40GB) without a problem. I've read many posts saying MS-1 does NOT need an amp. I can agree with this, although I don't have an amp to compare with.

I too will toss in a suggestion for the MS-1. $99 USD shipped is a great offer. I listen mainly to Rock as well, with some metal and lots of other types of music. I too moved from the PX-100 to the MS-1, and I LOVE it. Since I tried MS-1 I haven't touched the PX-100. I will admit I use KSC-75 when I need the portability since it's similar to MS-1. PX-100 has been claimed by my wife, which is fine with me

Check the MS-1 Appreciation thread if you have doubts!

No problem; MS-1 works great out of both my PCDP and my wifes iPod and the kids Muvos' with plenty of volume and great accuracy. No problem at all!

Great phones by the way! Watch out though; they can be addictive!!

I've had my MS-1 for almost a week now and I love them. I listen to pretty much nothing but rock and metal and these sound excellent. I too have PX100 and the MS-1 sound a lot better to me.

You definitely don't need an amp, it sounds great straight out of the iPod headphone out.

Woah, if I plug my HD580s into my ZVM about 13/25 is the sweet spot, but 25/25 is VERY loud.

Perhaps I listen too quietly...

No put-down to the Grados' intended, but Grado lists the SPL of the Grados at 98db and the MS-1(and MS2i)as 100. So the MS-1 should be expected to be somewhat more efficient.

Well, I do like bass, so maybe the SR-80s are more to my liking. Are there any specialty stores that would let me listen to them both? Buying headphones sucks because I can never listen to what I'm thinking about buying.
