Hi all,

Both an introduction and a request!

I'm Alessandro, I'm Italian but living in the Netherlands, currently doing a PhD in Applied Physics.
My usual setup is normally quite limited, as I just use my work laptop and my 2 years old AKG K550. These were my first real headphones, and I really love them!
At home, I listen from my desktop connected with coaxial cable to a Rotel RA-12, powering two Canton Vento 880DC.

I'm gonna be in US East Coast for 3 weeks, arriving at the end of November (on black Friday, actually). I'll be in Boston for a conference for a week, and then I'll move to NYC, Philadelphia and DC, visiting each for a few days.

I'm rather satisfied with my headphones but I feel like I'm ready to take it to next step in quality: I know mine are not cheap headphones, but I didn't want to spend too much at my first buy so I limited myself to around 200$.
I would buy these headphones for my home setup (I think connected to a laptop the K550 are already more than good enough).

To my question: I'd like to get some advice on a few shops worth visiting in the cities I mentioned (Boston, Manhattan, Philadelphia and Washington DC) where I could try several headphones on a decent setup.

I'm still looking for any brand, and my budget would be at most 600$. I'd like closed headphones, even if I have to use them at home, but I might start using them around, so I'd like them to be relatively portable. 600$ is my absolute ceiling, I'd like to spend a bit less if at all possible. If you have already some advices on the possible cans, I'd love that (looking online, I had a Oppo PM3 phase, and a B&O H6 phase for now, but I'm very fickle).
Also, in general, I'm living in Europe so most European brands (Sennheiser, Beyer, AKG, B&O, etc) are normally cheaper on this side of the Atlantic, but I find it sometimes difficult to find a good shop where I can try them.

Looking forward to your replies! And also, if I forgot to say something, point it out please!

Manhattan - Stereo Exchange.  DC ought to have some worth checking out although I can't personally name any.
