If it has noise isolation, that means you're cut off from the rest of the world which is not good (you need to be able to hear incoming cars, etc).

If it's open air, other people will hear your music, which is very rude.

In either case, you advertise yourself as a target for theft.

It's just not practical. But I don't think it's a fashion faux pas. I would say save the noise isolation cans for on the train or bus, and don't bother otherwise (assuming you're not afraid of theft).
