I am not sure if this belongs in the portable or full size headphone forum and I am kind of looking for the best of both worlds if that exists.

I am looking for a good set of headphones that can double as both a stay at home set and be somewhat portable.   By somewhat portable I mean be able to be taken on vacation or on business trips (not necessarily on a plane) as opposed to being worn while doing daily errands or on an everyday basis.   This set would be used with both a portable device (Cowon Z2, Iphone4, or Ipod Touch) along with a portable amp if needed.  When at home it would be driven by my Yamaha Aventage receiver.

I have a fiio e17 portable amp so if the headphones need extra power that is ok, as I am in good shape there already.   I primarily listen to classic rock and recently purchased a Cowon Z2 and have been using flac pretty much exclusively since then.   If I do rip to mp3 it is pretty much at 320 bit rate.

I would like to keep the purchase around $500 or less.

A couple headphones I am interested in trying out are the Grado 325is and the Sennheiser HD650.   With my music taste are there any others I should specifically be looking at?

Thanks for any help you can provide

The Grado and sennheiser you chose are both 'open'. You will hear things around you when using them, and people around you will hear what you are listening to. I think you should be looking for a 'closed' headphone eg. Sennheiser hd 25 II, Beyerdynamic T50P.. good luck finding a nice pair of cans

The fulsize closedback headphones like Denon D2000, D5000, Ultrasone Pro900, Beyer-Dynamic P70(250 Ohm), ES10, Parrot razor, klipsch M40 and Harrnen Kardon BT are great buy. But you can buy IEMs for both purposes and higher end IEMs like Sony EX1000, XBA4, Westone 4R, CK100Pro, SE535 and HeirAudio 4i are great buy under this budget.

thank you for the suggestions, I'll start doing some research on the various models.   I have never had good luck getting in-ear models to fit properly.   Are there any models that are easier to fit than others?

Thanks
Mike

If you could stretch your budget, the Audio Technica W3000s would make a great all rounder.
