So I am looking to get some new over ear headphones. These will be used at home only. Usually used for Music (Electronic, Rock / Metal, Pop) and Gaming. Currently, I have a JDS 02 DAC/AMP (Also have a xDuoo TA-01 DAC/Amp). Looking for something that would be daily use around ~$600 from amazon preferably (Have a $100 credit there). Was almost going to pull the trigger on a pair of HD 700's today but wanted to see if anything else peaked my interest.

Edit: Forgot to note, Current headphones are HD 380 PRO & Game Zero's. Plus a myriad of other cheaper head phones (Razer Kraken 7.1, Mionix Nash, Superlux HD668B)

Open headphones are usually the best choice for gaming over closed headphones as they provide a better soundstage. Most of us find that better for music, too. So probably best to stick with open in making your choice unless you need the isolation of closed headphones. Check out this set of headphone reviews for gaming: http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-3-18-2016-mrspeakers-ether-c-1-1-added. Might influence your choices.

There could easily be a $400 headphone not available on Amazon that would sound better to you than a $600 one that you can buy there. So I'd recommend focusing on what are best for you, then see if you can afford them for $500 off Amazon or $600 on.

You might look into planar magnetic headphones like the HE-400i.

I have been looking into the HE-400i's. Only issue I had with them is the head-strap does not look terribly comfortable although never really tried the "Suspended Strap" style before. Do they also really make that much of a difference?

Planar Magnetics have very good transient response, so people find that they can produce uber well defined bass for the money. As to whether or not you would like them better than the HD700, the difference could be more about which has the overall frequency response you like better and other factors (e.g. fit or comfort).

Doing a little more research I really wont be able to tell which one I like better unless I try them. Think I might pull the trigger on the HE-400i. I am really interested in trying out something I have never heard before so I am willing to test it out. I did hear that the cable is a bit short and stiff so I think I'm going to pick this up to replace it.

Amazon has a really good return policy if you order from them or fulfilled by Amazon (not 3rd party vendors that do their own shipping). So you might order two different headphones, compare, keep the one you like best, and then see the $10 to $12 return shipping on one as a reasonable demo fee given how much you are investing here. Many of us have done that.

Went ahead and did that both prime so that helps. I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the help.
