Hi all,

I'm totally new on high-end equipment and I'm looking for a decent pair of headphones.

I will use them at the office (90% of the time) and maybe at home without an amp. I'm looking a confortable pair and not much expensive (<100$).

For street listening I have the Creative ep630 and really like them but I want to listen to my mates when they talk to me or if the phone rings at the office, and don't want to distract my cubicle neighbour with the music.

Oh, I live in Lima (Peru) and sometimes my ears are hot when I use full closed headphones, so, a fresh ones would be apreciated

I was reading reviews and this are my choices:

Sennheiser PX200: looks confortable (and not so hot) and they have great reviews
Grado SR60i: great reviews but also read that they are a little unconfortable.
iGrado: same as SR60i (?) but maybe unconfortable
AKG Acoustics K 414

Any advise? maybe other models?

thank you!

Sounds like you're looking for something non-portable. You said your ears get hot with closed phones, but it sounds like office phones would pretty much have to be closed (or semi-closed if its a very quiet office). That rules out the Grados that you listed.

I dont know anything about pricing in Peru, but if I were looking for closed office phones I'd look at the Sony MDR-V6, Sony Eggos, and maybe some Audio-Technica ATH-ES7's.

If you're open to open phones (keep in mind that people around you will hear what you're listening too) then the Sennheiser PX100 > PX200 in terms of sound quality.

I would go with the Grado SR-60i if you want quality sound but the ability to also hear your surroundings. With their open-ear design, they leak sound both in and out, so you can hear your surroundings and others can hear your headphones. But if you're listening at moderate levels, or your office isn't as quiet as a library, you shouldn't bother anyone with your headphones. I've worn my Grados to the gym, the doctor's office and other places where there were people around me. The sound leakage wasn't an issue. But the ability to hear around me was nice. The only place where my Grados didn't work was traveling in a car or on a plane where the rumble and din of high speeds engulfed my listening pleasure. For that kind of experience, I prefer the sound isolation of an in-ear monitor, which blocks out 20 dB before you turn anything on.

The Grado also has amazing sound, crisp sonic detail that will blow you away.

Thank you Joker and Bilavideo

Those Sony's looks a little big but nice. The ears getting hot is not a big problem (It's not so hot in summer here but sometimes people turn off the air). It's not a quite office (people always talking) but, for example, the Creative ep630 are so much.

The Sennheiser PX100/200 and AKG Acoustics K 414 size looks to be OK (in pictures), they looks confortable.

Maybe a dumb question: are the PX200 and AKG K 414 closed (or semi closed)? and the PX100 and SR60i open right?

BTW, I'm buying the headphones in the States, so I'm looking prices in Amazon.

That is correct: PX200 and K414 are both closed and the PX100s/Grados are open. I prefer open for home use due to the inherent advantages in terms of soundstage and airiness and closed for portable use b.c I need the isolation.

I thin I will go now for a closed model and maybe my next model will be an open one. What would you choose? PX200 or K414?

Another newbie question: does the PX200 or K414 need an amplifier?

I will use them with my Creative Zen V / iPod. As I'm totally new, I don't know if I will need an amp later and here in Peru it's almost impossible to buy a nice pair of headphones or headphones amps. So, as my friend is going to the USA I want to buy all what I will need for a while. Maybe a Fiio E3 or E5?

BTW: I listen to rock n' roll (50's), psychobilly, punk, ska and some classic rock.

I only have the PX100, and they do scale up well with an amp, but they sound good without one as well. I would probably pick the PX200 over the AKG just because I have faith in the build quality of Sennheiser portables.
