headphone jack on PC

as soon as I get the answer I am sure I will smack myself upside the head as I believe I am having a brain fart at the moment...
do I connect to the headphone jack at the front of my PC or the rear or does it not matter?

I'm not sure if I fully understand what your trying to do here. It doesn't really matter both jacks are pretty much the same thing. The one in front is for convenience.

The jacks are the same, but the front one tends to be of less quality. The reason behind this is the wire going from the motherboard to the front audio jack runs through the case and is subject to lots of EMI from all the parts in there.
