Does anybody know why is it that sometimes I get hiss on my portable player (ipod 5.5 video 80 gb) with some headphones and not others?

Is this related to the impedance (ohm) ratings of the headphones?

I get the hiss more with in ear phones like my shure E2c than with over the ear headphones like my Sony set.

I think in most cases its the headphones. I know that with my shures, I get hiss from anything and everything. But this doesnt happen with my sony iems.

Its more about sensitivity.


For example, my 16 ohm marshmallows hiss less than my 27ohm UM2, because the UM2 are much more sensitive.

What about high impedence headphones (like, 300 ohms)? Is the best setup a headphone amplifier + high impedence/low sensitivity headphones?

You won't be hearing any hiss with high impedance cans.

An amp would be useful. None of my players do justice to my 250ohm 880s.
