I have a sony rh1 that I will be using to listen to music in my dorm. I would like a good headphone that would complement this well, something that wouldn't be overkill for this unit. Mostly I will be listening to jazz and rock so something that is versatile would be nice. Please recommend a good headphone thank you.

Although I haven't tried them, I heard that the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro are pretty good closed headphones. Wish I could recommend more closed ones to you. I'd be interested to hear what you end up getting. Good luck

For rock and jazz combo, I think you would like the Grado SR 225. They sounded great for those two genres IMHO. I had them connected to my HR Microstack, but they did sound good just connected straight to my Ipod. I didn't listen to the other Grado lineup, but I'm hoping too soon. The only thing about the Grados is that some people feel they are uncomfortable. IMO, I didn't think they were uncomfortable, but that just me

. I'm sure more people will throw you suggestions.

I'll second the SR-225 and MS-2i for open options. For closed in the same price range, $200-300, how about an Audio Technica A900 or Denon AH-D2000? This leaves a potential remainder from your maximum budget to grab a portable amp. (I just googled around and found a review saying the headphone out is a bit weaker than that of a rio karma, which means that for anything needing more power than an IEM, you'll hear some improvement with a good amp. Check Skylab's epic comparison thread in the amp forum for advice in that direction.

sorry for the late update but after some real back and forth and research about the phones that you guys recommended I decided to go with grado sr225. Can you guys also recommend a good amp to go with this? Thank you all for the help!
