Without knowing the headphone section specs, I dare say it uses a simple resistor off the power amp stage, which might suggest a high output impedance. With this in mind, the Hifimans wouldn't make a great pairing. The Beyers ought to be fine, as would the Sennheiser HD650 or HD600. Also check out the Audio Technica ATH-R70X.

Actually planar headphones are impacted less by impedance mismatch than dynamic drivers are. Its not an optimal way to drive planar headphones, but they can sound very very good out of a vintage receiver.

You will want to stick to high impedance headphones. Look for an impedance of 250 ohms and above. Also it would help if you can mention the types of music you prefer.

I would suggest a Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohms or DT990 250 or 600 ohms if you like EDM, Hip/Hop, pop

For rock, blues, jazz I'd recommend Sennheiser HD650 or HD600. Another great headphone for rock is the AKG K240 sextett which is 600 ohms. It is discontinued so you have to buy used, but IMHO its the best sounding headphone of any of the others listed in this thread.

In relation to planar magnets, I had read that same about it. Do you consider it a valid and good option?
Regarding the music I listen to, what a disgrace ... from jazz to post-punk, going through an endless number of styles. There will be something to start that meets my needs in general, without having to resort to different expenses?
going back to your first quote could it be the hifimans??? thanks for your help!
I send you a brotherly hug

My first real setup that i enjoyed was a HifiMan HE500 driven by a vintage Sansui 881, which had a similar output to your Luxman. There was certainly plenty of power for the HE500s and drove them with excellent authority. The only negative was a slight bit of grain in the bass department. I havent heard the HE400i , but I would guess that you will have a similar experience as well.

The dynamic headphones will give you a perfect match impedance wise as long as you keep it 250 ohms or higher.

Every headphone in this price bracket has its pros and cons.
The Beyers have nice midbass thump and good sub bass as well, but the treble can be harsh and the mids are recessed.
The Sennheisers have nice mids but lack in extension in both the treble and sub bass.
The K240 sextetts are my favs, but they too arent perfect as they have virtually no sub bass whatsoever, but the mids are mind blowing good.
could it be the hifimans???
Again, I havent heard the HE400i, so I cant tell you for sure whether you will like them or not, but if a bit of grain bothers you I would stick with dynamic driver headphones.
