HI: Boy They should put me in jail for ruing my SR-225. I mean here I have this fantastic headphone and what do I do ? I ruing them by thinking that I me know better than MR Grado and his expert designers. I get the RS-1 and through away the bowl pads and buy replacement pads. I get my SR-225 and though the bowl pads in a drawer and put on replacement pads. Like I know better than MR Grado on how his cans should sound. I bought rat shack pads and other pads and thought that then were comfortable and sounded great. Then fore some strange reason like whats wrong with my great SR-225 I got the new softer and thicker bowl pads out of the drawer and put them on. And to my astonishment there it is. That great sound with the sound stage that was never there with those replacement pads. My SR-225 have a great sound stage with the bowl pads and to my surprise they are also very comfortable. Like my ear seems to fit inside of them but not touch the driver. I use a little more volume on my amp because my ear is farther away from the drivers but that makes the sound fuller with a much better sound stage. I bad mouth the bowl pads and am sorry for doing so. I even bad mouth MR Grado and ask his forgiveness. Now with the new bowl pads I am getting great sound and sound stage and great comfort on my the way it was designed SR-225. Sometimes I think I know better than those that do know better and just cut myself short. I say again. Guess what? The SR-225 have a great sound stage with the new bowl pads. What a crime I committed by redesigning the stock pads.

I think it might be a matter of subjective opinion. For kicks, I bought: bowl pads, comfy pads, senn pads; all for my SR-60. I tried all of them and realized that I like the original large, floppy comfy pads that the SR-60 shipped with. Note that this is not the same as the comfy pads that are currently shipping. From there the next best was the Senn pads, and then the comfy pads, and then the bowl pads last... I'm also contemplating ordering the vwap pads as the final piece of the puzzle, but we'll see.

It could also be the case that I got so used to hearing 2 years of the original stock Grado pad that the others felt odd. Who knows, it may be different with the SR-225's. I have a pair fo the 225's on order and I'll go through the whole rotation again to see if it makes a difference.

Both the bowl and modded Senn pads have their own tradeoffs. To me, the modded senns are too congested, everything shoved too close together. They do however help with the energetic top end of the MPSs and fill out the mids more. It also matters how they sit on your ear, the modded Senn pads just sit too close to my ear, too sunken in. With well broken in bowl pads, they seem to sit at a much better position for me, too stiff of a bowl sometimes with the MSPs can sit too far and have too much energy up top.
I never thought the modded Senns were anything really superior to the bowls, which is what it seems if you read comments about them. They really both just have tradeoffs involved.

Lou, does this mean you wouldn't have sold your RS-1's if you had tried the bowls on them?

That's too bad

Audiocubes takes awhile for shipping right? hmm...

No matter what the prevailing opinion is, always make sure to try things for yourself and form your own opinion. I have listened to the bowls I have and can say I don't like them over the vwap pads for my SR200's. Of course SR200's were designed with flat pads, and as vwap pads are imitations of the flat pads this makes sense.

Anyway, good luck locating a CD3000 soon, Lou. Maybe then you can settle down with a headphone and be happy?

Lou, check out this link.

For the best price, just ask if you can get free shipping, or tell them that UPS shipping is cheaper than what they charge.

LOU:

Don't you find the SR225 also seems a little lighter with the bowl pads? I mean physically not sonically. Like the bowl pads make you think it should be heavy like a larger phone but it's nice and light and snug on the head? The sound is very nice, fast, light, detailed, spacious, delicate, until the lower treble begins to grate. Then the affair is over.

Me, I also find all pads to be a trade-off. You gain some highs and soundstage and you lose some bass, and vise versa. Face it, we will never be happy with one pad. I even find trade-offs with the original flat donut pads. Nothing in between seems to work either. When I get frustrated, I put on the HD580 or HD600, often the K501.

I guess that's the reason there are different foods, movies, books, tv shows, et. - we all have different tastes. For me, switching to the Senn pads has brought a whole new life to my SR80's and I seriously doubt I'll ever strap the bowls back on. I'm hedging my bet though by keeping them.

Hello Lou, I wonder if what is happening here may not be better explained by the great Sigmund Freud.
smily_headphones1.gif
I too seem to be experiencing this delima,so I did a little research. I believe he termed it ...........

Addictive Audio False advancement
or better known in layman terms, too many people blowing smoke and I believed them.

( BTW,He also was an audiophile nut at the tender age of 3.He came to realize this after he completed his B.A. when he turned 8. That is what really got him started on the path to what he is better known for.If I remember correctly he was quoted shortly after the doctor slapped his ass at birth as saying "my Quest in life will be the perverbial headphone experience,,,,,or something like that.) Anyway, where was I?

Oh yeh,

I know where you are at with this Lou,trust me,I do. In my short but addictive buying campaign to climb the ladder to higher listening pleasures, looking back,I realized at times I experienced a classic case of false advancement. At least I think thats what it was,That or I'm bi-polar.

Now I've lost track again,****.........

I think I'm going to ask my parents if I had anything important or unusual to say shortly after birth, because to be quite honest,I can't really remember much about that day. Oh well.........................

Lou,in closing, don't give up the quest and don't allow us to give up our quest to follow you. You are one of the rock solid ships that manages to stay the course in this sea of crappy sounding gimmics. Sail on my friend, the sun is just over the horizon!

Wait a minute, that might be Ziggy turning on the bathroon light.

Oh,I forgot to mention, for some reason Ziggys biograghy(I believe thats what I was reading) never mentioned anything about his lifes quest after he tried the Beyer DT880's.

About the only thing I could find relating to this thru-out the remainder of his writings was something in regards to the strange looks he was always seeing on peoples faces(primarily those over the age of 16) as he was in transit between his home and office,on foot, listening to his favorite phones. He commented that he did notice however that his reflection in the glass entryway door always seemed to have what appeared to be a permanent smile.

Where was I?

Dohhhhhhh,,,,,,,,,Crap

Lou,

All of this happened so fast I did not even see the RS-1's up for sale. I hope you don't want me to send the CD3000's back

I am enjoying them. I am starting to think my way of buying headphones and related equipment works out pretty well. I buy stuff and never sell anything, that way I always can rotate back and compare.
