I am looking to buy a pair of headphones to mix studio recordings on but also listen to my portable md on. I am looking at the Sennheiser HD 25sp's and the Sennheiser HD 280's, but I don't know which ones would be best. Can anyone suggest which ones might be better.

THANKS.

Anyway, maybe you should consider the DT250/250 as well. It doesn't go too loud from portable sources and definitly profits from a headphone amp, though. But I'd think it would be great for mixing, as it's very balanced and extended. Comfort is nice, too, and it also offers some isolation.

HD280's a good choice off a console but I found it a bit thin on portables, but that was like a 2-minute test since I don't use the HD280 with portables. That's also comparative with other phones, so if you don't listen to others in parallel, I could see people being very happy with the HD280.
How about the ever present Sony MDR-7506? Works fine with my MD's and this phone is supposed to be the standard in studios everywhere...
The DT250-80 is more a vocal-specific monitor I think... and is a bit weak off MD's. The 250-250's would be even harder work for MD's to power although I've not had a 250-250.
Personally I use the Audio-Technica ATH-A900 and the Sennheiser HD25 mainly for monitoring, but it's not really serious recording monitoring I do (I use a mixing console to 'consolidate' my audio gear around my computers for editing, recording and of course listening) so something which sounds 'entertaining' is important to me, which may not be what you want.
