Headphoneus Supremus
After having and enjoying the akg 271 studio's for a week or so I had this feeling that something was holding them back. The detail and accuracy of treble were spot on but the bass was lacking and vocals sounded a little thin almost nasal. I have bought quite a few cables both ic's and other headphone replacement cables from Larry at Headphile. So I fired off an e-mail to Larry to see if he could come up with a replacement cable for the 271's. A number of e-mail's and two weeks later the headphile silver replacement cable arrived at my doorstep. After a brief listen I let the cable burn in for 24 hours before doing any serious listening.
So 24 hours later I started listening again....WOW. I've heard pretty drastic improvements when getting cable replacements for the hd 600 and cd 3000 but this is the largest improvement I've heard. Treble was still detailed and accurate but now there was this "air," sense of space whatever you wish to call it, the k271's now have it. This is especially apparent listening to vocals, as they now have a much "fuller" sound when compared to the stock cable. The bass now goes a touch deeper and is tighter and punchier than it is with the stock cable.
With the stock cable the 271's are very detailed and accurate headphones definitely leaning if not firmly implanted in the "analytical" camp of headphones. With the headphile silver cable they are even more detailed and accurate, but now they have the air, separation and bass punch that makes them a very smooth, fun headphone. It's as if the k271's went from having only high beams to having normal headlights, high beams and flashers.
Prior to getting the headphile cable I was unsure if the k271's would have a very long stay in my system. While they always sounded good I could always tell that something was missing. I can honestly say that with the headphile cable the k271's will be around for a long time.
