Hello,
A little backstory:
I started out with a pair of Grado SR80e's with a DragonFly v1.2. I used them for about a year and they were a great intro into this expensive hobby. I kept looking at possibly a better pair of Grados or HiFiMans but I was having a hard time justifying the cost since I didn't have anywhere to demo them. I finally decided to just go for the HE-560s and I absolutely LOVE them. I've had them for a few weeks and they still give me chills. I purchased a DragonFly Red at the same time since from what I read it was able to drive them. I feel like I'm at the limits with the DFR since I need to have to volume up around 85%+ (although it's still loud enough for me and sounds good).
So my first question is: How much potential am I missing out on without a DAC/amp combo?
My main listening is via computer using Spotify/Tidal/FLAC. This will be strictly for home so size/portability doesn't matter.
I've been looking at:
Schiit Bifrost Multibit
Schiit Lyr2
But I'm also interested in the the Jotunheim, but seems a little mixed reviews on the DAC.
How much of a difference is there from the DragonFly Red to the Bifrost/Lyr2 combo? Is it worth justifying $200 vs $1,129? Does it seem overkill for these headphones? It is within my budget but I'm worried that there won't be enough of a noticeable difference for the cost difference. Most of what I listen to isn't high res (just 44.1). I do see the benefit in the investment for future headphones though.
Any suggestions or insight is greatly appreciated. This is my first dive into hifi and I want to continue to improve my setup.
Thanks!
-Matt
