I just bought a pair of hifiman he-500s , and being planars, I was wondering of they could be driven safely from my Dads Pioneer Vsx-822 receiver? If so, would it sound any better than the o2 I'm getting?

The headphone socket on VSX amps is connected to the main amplifier via large resistors so there is no shortage of power available.  The 500's however aren't that power hungry so i suspect they will sound better from the O2. Try them with both and see, and let us know what you find.
 
I have ordered a pair of He-500's too, and have an O2 and Pioneer VSA amp beside me so i will try them too and see.
