I'm looking at building my own balanced cables for the HD800 and looking at some leads for connectors and cabling. This will be my first DIY so looking for a little guidance.

I do have one small concern. In my eyes it looks like the proprietary connectors appear to be very skinny. Would I be wasting my time going with a 22gauge or larger cable and then just having to bottle neck going through these small connectors?

I would email Lawton Audio, They build them with 22g Jenna cable and they also sell the connector for us DIY'ers. I would think that anything larger than 22 would be too stiff and not worth the extra diameter. Also in the lawton PICs you can see a bit of room left in the opening (Imagine the white heat shrink gone), but I'm sure they can give you the low down.

22g is going to be a very tight fit and I highly doubt you could fit anything larger in there. But if you do, let us know!

Yep, Apuresound told me they mod them for customers cuz there's no prayer of getting wire much bigger than 32 gauge in there without drilling, as the stock wire is 32 gauge. They have a machine shop, handily. You probably have to make a pretty big opening to get the 22 gauge in, but I'm sure it's all doable. Anyone have pix of the inside, I've never seen these before.

Since it may not be practical going bigger than 32 gauge, is it practical to make a custom cable or just mod the stock cable?

Wow! The big wire guys aren't gonna be able to get their 18 gauge wire into those tiny little pins.

What's the insulation material? PEEK?

Not sure about the insulation yet but the build is just fantastic. Very solid and shiny. I'd say it'd be a heck of hard work to make cable with these boys. They're tiny and yeah, even 22g may have difficult time to fit. Shouldn't be a big problem though

I use 27 gauge wire so not a problem here.

My only quibble is there doesn't seem to be any integral strain relief.

Sure looks like it. I'll e-mail them and ask. Or, I'll have some in hand within a couple of weeks and will check it then.

Coolness. Thanks!
