I've had a pair of HD650's for only half a year and they've started to go bad. I was listening to some music today and all of the sudden I began noticing some artifacts in the left channel. They got worse and worse over the next few minutes until it finally just quit and now I only have the right channel. Is this usually just a bad cable or are my actual drivers/components going bad? Sucks to spend so much money on something that's supposed to be so much better and yet it just quits on you in half a year like all the other crappy headphones out there.

If it is just a bad cable I think it'd make sense just to go ahead and upgrade a bit. Do you guys have any recommendations for mid-fi cables? I'm not looking to spend very much, if I have to get stock again I will.

It's probably just the cable shorting out. I would recommend getting a replacement stock cable and perhaps an aftermarket one to compare to.

Yeah, I pushed on the connection between the wire and the prong converter thing on the top and it works if I do that. I guess I'll just grab a replacement off BH unless someone has a good suggestion for a cheap upgrade.

It might just be a worn spring in the contact area inside the cup. If you're feeling adventurous, take the cup apart and locate the springs where the prongs touch. There could be dirt here or the springs have bent out of shape. A fine eyeglass screwdriver can be used to squish the springs back into proper shape. A bit of deoxit wouldn't hurt either if you have any.

I don't think it's inside the cup, its just below the prong unit thing on the wire, at the area where the wire and the prong unit connect.

Oh... yeah it's very likely the wire then. Replacement cables can be found relatively cheap online.
