I'm trying to get an overall feel for these two phones. I thought I'd pick a few artists and ask which headphone the music sounds better on. I know that in some cases it may not be clear cut --we'll consider sources to be optimum--, but it's just your own opinion.

I'm also wondering which hp is least fatiguing both phisically (i.e. pressure on ears) and mentally.

Artists (in no order of preference):
Michael Franti
Ben Harper
Norah Jones
Ben Folds Five
Led Zeppelin
Jethro Tull
John Coltrane
Dave Brubeck
2pac
Phish
Bella Fleck
Yonder Moutain String (bluegrass)
Dvorak (Violin works)
Saint Saens
Sasha & Digweed
Gladiator (OST)

many thanks

anyway, FWIW, i can only comment on the artistes i have experience with.

Norah Jones , Ben Folds Five, Led Zeppelin, 2pac and Sasha&Digweed are excellent with grados. imo the more immediate presence and far more strident (i mean loud.
wink.gif
) bass of the grados are better suited to these artistes.

my experience with senns are limited to the px200 and a stock hd600. for grados, the sr60, sr225, sr325, ms-2 and rs-2.

Strident bass????

stri·dent - Loud, harsh, grating, or shrill; discordant

on the same note, you've set me thinking about how i should describe the mid-bass hump that makes music so fun to listen through grados.

To me strident has a negative connotation to it.

Loud - big, blaring, blatant, blustering, boisterous, booming, cacophonous, clamorous, crashing, deafening, deep, ear-piercing, ear-splitting, emphatic, forte, full, full-mouthed, fulminating, heavy, high-sounding, intense, loud-voiced, lusty, obstreperous, pealing, piercing, powerful, rambunctious, raucous, resonant, resounding, ringing, roaring, rowdy, sonorous, stentorian, strident, strong, thundering, tumultuous, turbulent, turned up, uproarious, vehement, vociferous

ok ok! enough fun with dictionary.com!

i've always taken strident to be along the lines of powerful, clear and loud - which is not wrong. then again, so is your intepretation.

i'll edit my original post if you want me to..

Welcome to the Gratest team around here: Team Grate.
Competes well with Team Harsh and Team Discordant. All these qualitites come together with a fantastic package in the Grados. Sadly my SR-325s are now on the sellers block. (Now that I'm actually buying the RS-1).

I'm going to say to go for the RS-1s, under the stipulation that soundstage is not of paramount importance. Sonic-wise, i don't think the sennheisers hold a candle to the grados. Nevertheless, the sennheisers do beat out the grados in the area of soundstage: particularly valued in classical music. Ask yourself just how important soundstage is to you.

Go for the grados

But also much more immediate sounding due to the extreme bass.
